Nintendo Games Are Expensive Because the Company Wants to “Respect the Value” of its Releases – Former Nintendo PR

Although the Nintendo Switch was a highly successful console, and it seems likely that the Switch 2 will follow suit, one common complaint about Nintendo is that games for its systems tend to be pricier than on other platforms. This applies not only to Nintendo’s own games but also to those developed by third-party companies, whether they are major ones or indie studios.

In a recent video, Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang, who previously managed PR at Nintendo, discussed Nintendo’s unique strategy regarding their games. They explained that Nintendo values each title they release and this philosophy extends to how they handle collaborations with influencers who organize game giveaway events. You can watch the video below for more insights.

Ellis stated, “Nintendo products hold great worth, so we should always acknowledge their significant value.” This is why they don’t often go on discount. The value is inherent and we deeply believe in preserving the value, as these items are truly unique and valuable.

Yang points out that it’s common for games on Nintendo platforms, particularly popular series like “The Legend of Zelda” or “Super Mario Bros.”, to not often go on sale. This is different from experiences with Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S, Sony’s PS5, and Steam on PC. Yang suggests that Nintendo console users have come to accept this as a standard part of enjoying Nintendo games.

Yang stated that, being a Nintendo enthusiast, one often finds themselves thinking, ‘Since I’m likely not going to see a discount on this item, I might as well purchase it right away.’

As a gamer myself, I’ve jokingly dubbed the expensive prices of games on Nintendo consoles as the “Nintendo Premium.” It’s no secret that Nintendo believes their games are worth more than many others in the market, and I can certainly see why after playing some of them.

As a devoted fan, I’d say, “I get why Ellis calls it the ‘Nintendo Premium.’ We priced our game at $60. Compared to other games at the same price, ours truly outshines them in quality, polish, and attention to detail. The high price tag is a testament to its superiority, and I believe you’ll soon appreciate that fact.

Nintendo has faced intense scrutiny lately due to the high pricing of the forthcoming Switch 2 and some initial games slated for the system. To provide a bit of background, the console retails at $449.99, while the digital version of Mario Kart World costs $79.99. If you prefer a physical copy, it will cost you $89.99 instead.

Doug Bowser, president of Nintendo of America, has addressed the criticism regarding the company’s hardware and software pricing in a recent interview. He elaborated on how Nintendo values its products, noting that while some fans may find the cost of the new console and accompanying games prohibitive, there are other Switch consoles available for playing their titles.

Bowser acknowledged that some individuals might find the price of the Switch 2 too high. To ensure everyone has a chance to join our gaming world, we’ve made other Switch models available. This way, people can meet these beloved characters and explore these captivating worlds, regardless of which version they choose, finding value in their chosen platform tier.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is hitting store shelves on June 5.
