Nintendo recently received a new patent from the U.S. Patent Office that could bolster its potential legal actions against game developer Pocketpair, regarding the game “Palworld”. This patent, initially spotted by Games Fray in July 2024, is part of a wider patent dating back to December 2021.
The patent details gameplay elements where a player employs an object to seize another figure during play, and these seized figures are then utilized for combat against other characters. The mechanics described in the patent bear resemblance to various games within Nintendo’s Pokemon series.
The patent’s mention of various “modes” for using items to capture characters implies a reference to the game Pokémon Legends: Arceus, as this title emphasizes real-time Pokémon capturing in its primary gameplay. Nintendo has already issued legal warnings against Pocketpair over similar patents they possess in Japan.
Because Nintendo now owns these patents in the U.S., it can carry on its legal dispute with Pocketpair in this country. To clarify, Pocketpair’s game Palworld involves players capturing creatures (Pals) in the field using items, which they can later use to engage in battles against other Pals or human opponents.
The patent outlines one mode where, when aiming, a player receives a targeting crosshair that displays information about the characters they are focusing on. Subsequent actions can be performed on these characters based on the player’s intentions.
In a more current development, Nintendo has taken action, this being a follow-up to their November step when they sued Pocketpair for allegedly violating three of Nintendo’s patents.
Pocketpair appears eager to expand their business ventures, and they made this clear back in January when they announced their entry into the game publishing industry. One of their initial announcements within this new focus is a game being developed by Surgent Studios, the creators of Tales of Kenzera: Zau. Later on, Pocketpair explained that their foray into game publishing is driven by a desire to offer independent developers greater financial autonomy, enabling them to produce the games they envision.
