Nintendo Is Hunting Down the Teraleaker
The California Court Is Already Involved
On April 18th, Nintendo submitted a subpoena to the US District Court for the Northern District of California. The purpose of this legal document is to compel Discord to reveal the identity of a user known as GameFreakOUT. This individual allegedly shared confidential, non-public materials on the FreakLeak server, which subsequently spread across the entire internet.
Nintendo made numerous attempts to remove leaked materials using DMCA takedown notices, but for several months, the internet continued to circulate these leaks. In fact, Nintendo had taken preemptive measures to prevent the dissemination of information prior to it becoming public. On October 10, just two days before the official leaks, Game Freak announced that they had been hacked.
At this moment, the details of the subpoena’s outcome and whether Nintendo will receive private information are not disclosed. It’s also uncertain what actions Nintendo might take following the acquisition of the information, but it wouldn’t be unexpected if they decided to sue the leaker. Previously, another individual who shared photos of the Pokémon Sword and Shield strategy guide before its release faced a similar consequence.
