Nintendo is Teaming Up With Marketplaces in Japan to Curb Switch 2 Scalping Ahead of Launch

For the forthcoming launch of the Switch 2 in Japan, Nintendo has decided to take a strong stand against scalping practices. In a public announcement on their Japanese website, Nintendo has revealed that they are collaborating with Mercari, Yahoo! Auctions, Yahoo! Flea Market, and Rakuten Rakuma to implement strategies aimed at preventing scalpers from listing the Switch 2 for sale.

The company announced that Nintendo along with three other service providers will implement strategies to eliminate fraudulent product listings, specifically those related to upcoming items like the Nintendo Switch 2, which breach their individual usage policies. This may involve the proactive deletion of such listings by the service providers and the creation of a joint system for exchanging information.

In the context of this partnership, the involved companies are effectively prohibiting the advertisement of Switch 2 on their platforms. These platforms primarily function as eBay-like marketplaces where users can buy and sell goods. Given that many prominent online marketplaces in Japan may not be able to host these listings, scalpers might find it less appealing to acquire surplus stock that Nintendo intends for avid gamers.

In my excitement as a fan, I wanted to share that Yahoo, being a part of this partnership, has decided to temporarily ban any listings for the rumored Switch 2 on Yahoo! Auctions. This move is intended to avoid any potential confusion or fraudulent activities in the trading environment, as they collaborate with Nintendo. In contrast, Rakuten has communicated that they are merely postponing Switch 2 listings until the console officially launches.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has already gained significant popularity in Japan prior to its release. In fact, as early as April, Nintendo’s president Shuntaro Furukawa announced that over 2 million individuals had registered for the lottery system used to sell the console within Japan. To quote Furukawa, “On April 2, we unveiled the details of the Nintendo Switch 2 and initiated lottery applications on our My Nintendo Store. This led to an astounding 2.2 million application submissions from individuals in Japan.”

In his announcement, Furukawa expressed regret that not everyone who wanted to pre-order the Switch 2 would be able to, given the overwhelming interest in Japan exceeding the available supply for now. Although efforts have been made to simplify pre-ordering for those who missed the initial opportunity, Furukawa also shared that Nintendo is actively working on increasing production to meet demand.

He also mentioned that they intend to manufacture and deliver a large quantity of Nintendo Switch 2 devices in the future. He expressed his regret for any delay in meeting your expectations and requested patience and understanding.

The anticipated release date for the Nintendo Switch 2 is set for June 5. According to their latest financial statement, Nintendo aims to sell approximately 15 million units of this new console during the upcoming fiscal year.
