Nintendo Patent Seemingly Confirms Mouse Support for Switch 2 Joy-Cons

So far, Nintendo hasn’t provided much information about the Switch 2 directly, but a lot of significant details about the upcoming console have been leaked through unofficial sources. Among these leaks, it’s suggested that the new Joy-Con controllers for the Switch 2 might function as mice, a feature hinted at in the console’s reveal trailer. However, Nintendo hasn’t officially confirmed this yet. Interestingly, a patent filed by Nintendo seems to support this claim.

According to a patent discovered on ResetEra, a potential new Joy-Con controller design includes a sensor for mouse-like functionality. This sensor works by picking up light reflections from a surface it’s placed upon, and the light changes as it moves across the surface when either the front or back side is in contact with it.

This patent includes multiple charts demonstrating various ways a Joy-Con can operate sideways, mimicking a computer mouse. Remarkably, certain illustrations depict an alternate controller design, one that can divide into two parts and function independently, much like the Joy-Con controllers you see below.

On April 2nd, a special presentation dedicated to the Nintendo Switch 2 is planned. It’s likely that we’ll get some insights into its potential mouse functionality during this broadcast. Keep an eye out for further details!
