Moving forward, it’s hard to predict exactly what lies ahead for “The Legend of Zelda” series, considering the recent release of the Nintendo Switch 2. There’s a strong possibility that we might see some remakes and re-imaginings of existing games. One certainty is the imminent arrival of “Hyrule Warriors” on the new Switch console. However, as for the mainline games, it remains to be seen what innovative adventures await us Link and Princess Zelda in their next journey.
Following the releases of “Tears of the Kingdom” and “Echoes of Wisdom”, it’s evident that the team behind Zelda has wrapped up the Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom iteration of Hyrule. This could signify a return to traditional, linear Zelda games or simply a new take on an open-world Hyrule. Regardless, it’s crucial not to dismiss this version of the fantasy realm so quickly as there’s still much potential left in it.
A compelling follow-up to the events of “Breath of the Wild” is poised for creation, though it could be considered a prequel technically. In the upcoming game, tentatively titled “Tears of the Kingdom,” Princess Zelda is sent back in time and joins forces with the Zonai to vanquish Ganondorf. (Light spoilers are present regarding “Tears of the Kingdom.”)
In that setting, we find the ideal continuation. It’s quite evident that fans of Zelda are eager to experience the adventure as Princess Zelda. The game Echoes of Wisdom was a refreshing and enjoyable change. Just like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, it was captivating, so why not combine their best aspects?
Princess Zelda Deserves Another Game
In the game “Tears of the Kingdom,” we catch a brief peek at the actions the princess takes, which were previously hidden from us as Link in other games. This revelation shifts our perception of her from a damsel in distress to a self-reliant heroine who made a considerable sacrifice to aid Link.
In the novel “Echoes of Wisdom”, she portrayed an exceptionally valiant heroine. However, this particular incarnation of the princess stands out as the epitome. This Zelda successfully confronted Ganondorf, studied diligently, and eventually gave up her life. It’s a story that perfectly encapsulates the essence of a “Legend of Zelda” narrative, yet it seems to be underappreciated.
Although Link is generally the more recognized figure, Zelda holds the title character role, and Link has been around for quite some time. In this particular game and “Echoes”, it seems an ideal moment to let him rest a bit, thus reinventing the series and offering players a fresh yet not overly different experience.
It’s quite possible that the game Echoes of Wisdom served as a test or experiment. Instead of sticking with the traditional male protagonist from their established franchise, they decided to change it to a female character, which could have been met with criticism. However, this change was well-received, and the game turned out to be good. It seems there’s a valuable lesson in this, but it remains uncertain if Nintendo will take note of it.
During her time stuck in the past, players encountered numerous flashbacks featuring Princess Zelda, but there’s still room for more story development. Since she was trapped for years, it provides an excellent backdrop for a compelling game given the creativity demonstrated by the development team in recent installments.
In this unnamed theoretical game based on Princess Zelda, we could delve deeper into the beloved lore that fans cherish. The introduction of Null in “Echoes” has enriched the world of Hyrule, making its history more comprehensive and intriguing.
In a more casual manner, we could rephrase this as: Although Nintendo tends to avoid dealing with the tangled chronology of their games, they’ve even gone back and changed things to suggest that the game Breath of the Wild starts a new timeline branch. This approach would help maintain consistency in their stories.
Instead of fans and players debating where each Zelda game fits within the overall timeline, except for Tears of the Kingdom, it would be much more straightforward if it were stated that this game belongs to the far-off past of the Breath/Tears timeline.
Furthermore, this game could serve as a stepping stone to expand the franchise beyond the Ganondorf vs. Link narrative. One might wonder how long Nintendo can continue exploring this particular storyline. To keep things fresh and engaging, they could introduce games featuring other beloved characters. If this Princess Zelda game gains popularity comparable to that of “Echoes of Wisdom”, Nintendo might venture into creating more spin-offs, enriching the timeline with stories about various characters cherished by fans.
Regrettably, it seems that ideas about this are more like fantasies for the time being. It’s unclear what direction Nintendo intends for its second-best-selling franchise, but a backstory for Princess Zelda within the universe they claim to be leaving behind appears rather improbable at best.
