Nintendo Reveals Why Zelda is the Main Character in Echoes of Wisdom Instead of Link

As someone who has spent countless hours traversing the enchanting landscapes of Hyrule and battling the forces of darkness since I was a child, I must admit that I was initially taken aback by Nintendo’s decision to make Zelda the protagonist in “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.” However, after delving deeper into the game’s development process and understanding the challenges faced by the developers, my skepticism has been replaced with excitement.

In the upcoming release of “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom” on Nintendo Switch later this week, players will take on the role of Princess Zelda instead of the typical character Link. For years, fans have been requesting a game centered around Zelda, and now they’re curious as to why this particular title makes that switch. In a recent blog post on Nintendo’s website, the creators discussed their challenges in harmonizing Echoes as a weapon with Link’s traditional sword and shield. The concern was that the sword and shield might make Echoes seem unnecessary, leading to the choice of a different protagonist.

In response to frequent queries about whether Princess Zelda might become the main character in the Legend of Zelda series, Aonuma has consistently considered the possibility and replied affirmatively under certain conditions. He’s been pondering how to effectively portray her as a protagonist. However, when he noticed his team was finding it challenging to determine the ideal hero for this specific game, he realized, “This is just the game for her!

From that standpoint, it makes a lot of sense why Zelda would get the nod over Link. While Nintendo has already announced that Zelda will have a Swordfighter Mode in the game, it’s much more limited than what we’re used to seeing from Link. The gauge quickly depletes, forcing the hero to lean more on using Echoes to fight in her stead. It’s not like we haven’t seen Link use gimmicks in other games; Minish Cap allowed him to shrink, while A Link Between Worlds allowed him to walk along walls as a painting. However, these features were more about exploration and less about combat.

As a devoted fan of the Zelda series, I can’t wait to experience the reactions of fellow enthusiasts when The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom hits the shelves. This game seems to be quite a departure from its predecessors in the franchise, which will undoubtedly require some adjustment from long-term fans like myself. Yet, by making Zelda the protagonist, I believe the developers are trying to make it less jarring for us to embrace something fresh and exciting.
