In simple terms, it appears Nintendo started taking pre-orders for the Switch 2 in various locations. As of now, Nintendo hasn’t shared any numbers, but a market analyst speculates that they might have around 6 to 8 million units ready for sale when the console officially launches on June 5.
Based on Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa’s recent statement that over 2 million Japanese fans participated in the lottery pre-order system, analyst Pelham Smithers from the equity research firm Pelham Smithers Associates estimates that this could represent approximately one-third of the total global pre-orders. This estimation is supported by the fact that the user base of the original Switch in Japan previously accounted for about a third of the worldwide Nintendo Switch user base.
Smithers stated, as reported by Bloomberg, that since one-third of all Switch installations worldwide are in Japan, this suggests approximately 6.6 million pre-orders worldwide.
In his recent post, Furukawa acknowledged the Japanese sales data and offered an apology. He mentioned that it’s possible some winners of the lottery for the upcoming Switch 2 might miss out on getting one during its launch.
On April 2nd, we unveiled the specifics of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 and initiated lottery registrations on our My Nintendo Store. The response was overwhelming, with a staggering 2.2 million applications flooding in from Japan alone.
Nevertheless, it significantly outshone our initial predictions and falls well beyond the quantity of Nintendo Switch 2 units we’re capable of providing through the My Nintendo Store on June 5.
Furukawa confirmed that Nintendo is taking measures to address this problem and plans to boost production of the upcoming console in subsequent batches. For those who entered the lottery but didn’t secure a pre-order, there’s no need to sign up again as they will be included automatically in the next draw.
“Additionally, we’re intending to manufacture and deliver many units of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. We deeply regret any inconvenience caused by the delay in fulfilling your expectations and appreciate your patience.”
As a gamer eagerly anticipating the Switch 2, I’ve found myself among many others who have faced challenges trying to pre-order this coveted console in the US and Canada. The overwhelming demand has apparently outpaced the capabilities of online retailers like Best Buy and Target, leaving us scrambling for a chance to secure our pre-orders. Frustrated buyers have flocked to social media platforms like X to share their struggles with technical issues that have hindered their attempts to pre-order the console.
“User DoobusGoobus persistently reloaded the Target page in an attempt to purchase a Switch 2. For approximately 20 minutes, he tirelessly refreshed the checkout page, hoping for success. However, despite the system indicating that it had finally worked, an email soon arrived stating that the transaction was promptly canceled. What a frustrating experience!”
Starting from now until Fall 2025, you can either buy the Nintendo Switch 2 for $449.99 individually or opt for a bundle that includes the new release game “Mario Kart World” for $499.99.
