Since Nintendo started accepting pre-orders for the Switch 2 in both the U.S. and Canada, there’s a lot of excitement on social media as fans attempt to secure their console. A common trend across posts indicates that the systems are overwhelming the online infrastructure of many North American retailers like Best Buy and Target due to high demand for pre-ordering the Switch 2.
As a dedicated gamer hopping onto my favorite social media hub, I found myself empathizing with Geoff Keighley of The Game Awards. He was attempting to pre-order the elusive Switch 2 via Target, only to encounter some frustrating hurdles. The console kept mysteriously vanishing from his digital cart, and to add salt to the wound, his payment transactions seemed to be hitting a snag as well.
Keighley posted: ‘The pre-orders for Switch 2 are tough!’ He explained that the system was in his shopping cart, but then disappeared, reappeared, refused to accept payment, and so on. Is anyone managing to pre-order successfully elsewhere?
In Keighley’s post, many users responded with similar troubles they encountered while dealing with technical issues from Target, along with other retailers such as Walmart and Best Buy. One particular post gave kudos to Target while expressing dissatisfaction towards the long wait times at Walmart and Best Buy. User LordOfRestocks wrote, “Target was a clear winner this time,” while voicing frustration over the slow queues at Walmart and Best Buy.
As a determined gamer like DoobusGoobus, I spent what felt like hours relentlessly hitting the refresh button on Target’s page in hopes of snagging the elusive Switch 2. I was stuck there for a good 20 minutes, constantly refreshing it, praying for success. But when it seemed to finally work, I got an instant letdown – an email stating that my purchase had been immediately canceled. What a frustrating turn of events!
Simultaneously, Nintendo has been experiencing a significant influx of demand after launching its pre-order lottery system for the Switch 2 in Japan. This week, President Shuntaro Furukawa shared on social media that over 2.2 million customers have registered for the Switch 2 via a lottery system on the My Nintendo Store.
In addition, Furukawa apologized and shared that Nintendo would be unable to meet the demand due to their current supply levels. Instead, he mentioned that Nintendo will streamline the process for lottery entrants who were unable to pre-order this time by automatically registering them for the lottery for future stocks of Switch 2s in Japan.
He explained that since those who weren’t chosen in the initial lottery wouldn’t need to reapply, their applications would automatically roll over to the second lottery at the My Nintendo Store. Yet, he noted that even with the increased number of available units for the second sale, we won’t be able to accommodate all the applications we’ve received. He expressed his sincere regret for not being able to meet your expectations despite our efforts in preparation.
As a thrilled supporter, I’m excited to share that the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 is set to hit the shelves on June 5th! For comprehensive insights, don’t forget to explore our previous coverage of the Switch 2 Direct held earlier this month.
Man @Target is brutal for Switch 2 pre orders.
System was in my cart, then it wasn’t, then it was, wouldn’t let me pay, etc.
Anyone having any luck elsewhere?— Geoff Keighley (@geoffkeighley) April 24, 2025
I repeatedly reloaded the Target page, waiting for switch 2, for about twenty minutes straight. I was hoping that each refresh would be the one that worked. However, once it appeared to function, I received an email stating the transaction had been instantly cancelled. Oh, what a frustrating experience!

Target was definitely the best this go around. These queues are terrible at Walmart and Best Buy.
