In their latest business briefing for the Sony Interactive Entertainment sector, Sony’s top executives shared their views on the newly released console – the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. SIE president and head honcho Hideaki Nishino discussed the new device in terms of competition with PlayStation, and whether it mattered that Nintendo was strengthening ties with external game developers and publishers, potentially posing a challenge to Sony’s position.
Nishino stated that we keep a close eye on all developments within the gaming industry, including those made by other players in the market. Furthermore, market catalysts are advantageous for the entire industry because they spark interest and increase demand more widely. It’s wonderful to see new ideas being introduced.
In his response, Nishino discussed that the PS5, the latest PlayStation console, delivers exceptional and engaging gaming sessions owing to its powerful hardware and distinctive capabilities embedded within the DualSense controller.
As I was saying earlier, our approach differs a bit. You see, the PlayStation 5 is all about delivering an immersive gaming experience, and that’s why we’ve packed it with innovative features for the DualSense controller. We think that top-tier performance is crucial to create something truly special on those big screens. So, we’re offering a unique experience tailored specifically for players and content creators in this console generation.
Regarding collaborations with external publishers and creators, Nishino points out that many businesses are adopting multi-platform approaches for their future game launches. This could potentially lead to fewer exclusive titles on PlayStation systems. However, he emphasizes that Sony remains committed to ensuring the PS5 serves as an attractive destination for creating and distributing games.
While it’s true that publishers are moving towards multi-platform strategies, allowing the same game to be played on multiple platforms, this trend is beneficial for creators. For us, among these various platforms, our aim remains to remain the top choice for both playing and publishing games. To achieve this, we have equipped our creators with the tools they need to develop extraordinary, distinctive gaming experiences that offer high player engagement and lucrative monetization options.” – Nishino.
Over time, we’ve maintained this approach as the industry and competition have shifted. Notably, our PlayStation Studios titles and franchises play a pivotal part in embodying the PlayStation experience and enhancing players’ perception of it.
Nishino addressed the worries of some Sony investors regarding Nintendo’s popularity among younger audiences due to their game releases. To alleviate these concerns, Nishino pointed out that the PlayStation user base is diverse across generations, with titles such as Marvel’s Spider-Man, Horizon series by Guerrilla Games, and Astro Bot from Team Asobi being key factors in attracting a wide range of ages.
Beyond the beloved franchises that span generations like Marvel’s Spider-Man, we also cater to various player demographics. Horizon, for instance, has resonated strongly with female gamers, while Astro Bot, crafted by our talented Team Asobi in Tokyo, has captured the hearts of kids and adults alike.
Apart from gaming, we’re also working on increasing interaction within the PlayStation world and image by extending our series to various platforms such as movies, TV shows, and anime. Specifically, anime is a great fit for our target demographic, making it an effective tool for us.
