Though Nintendo has set the Switch 2 at a price of $449.99, they have remained silent regarding the recently announced U.S. tariffs. With these tariffs in mind, Nintendo has halted pre-orders for the consoles, which were initially scheduled to start over the weekend.
It’s important to mention that although Nintendo hasn’t said anything about it yet, there’s a good chance the Switch 2 could see an increase in its cost due to its manufacturing being based in Vietnam. The U.S. has imposed a 46% tariff on goods made there, which would significantly bump up the console’s price within that country.
Although the U.S. has temporarily halted its tariff plans for certain nations, the Switch 2 will continue to face a 10% tariff within that country, as reported by Bloomberg. Analyst Robin Zhu from Bernstein posits that Nintendo may maintain its $449.99 price point if only a 10% tariff is incurred. However, Zhu anticipates a significant increase in the pricing for the Switch 2 if the proposed 46% tariffs come into effect.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but speculate that Nintendo might be choosing to maintain their console price at around $450, even with the 10% tariffs, accepting a hit on their profit margin. Given the 46% Vietnam tariffs, I had anticipated they would increase the price by roughly $50 to $100.
Previously employed Nintendo Public Relations managers, Kit Ellis and Krysta Lang, have pointed out that Nintendo could significantly boost its reputation among fans if it decides to “absorb the cost” of its high-priced consoles and games. This move would be well received by consumers in response to the controversial pricing of these products.
Ellis stated, ‘They’re capable and they can consume it without much impact.’ In response, Yang pointed out that the expensive pricing of games such as ‘Mario Kart World’ has caused Nintendo to lose some trust among its fanbase.
Yang stated that regaining trust amidst the present unfavorable opinions on pricing and concerns about the games and their cost in Mario Kart World, could help mend relationships with their existing fan base.
Regarding the software pricing, Nintendo has been firm on setting the $80 price point for Mario Kart World. During a recent interview, the VP of Product and Player Experience at Nintendo of America expressed confidence that the game will deliver its value at this price. Additionally, he highlighted the worth of the Switch 2 Edition releases for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, emphasizing their value.
Although the pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 have been temporarily paused, it’s scheduled to appear in retail stores on June 5th. The console will come with an optional bundle that includes the game “Mario Kart World,” priced at $499.99. At launch, several games will be available, including the “Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour” guide for players, which costs $9.99.
