Nintendo Switch 2 Could Have Been Called Super Nintendo Switch

In a recent developer Q&A session, Nintendo mentioned that they had contemplated naming their upcoming console as the “Super Nintendo Switch.” This name is a nod to the shift in console generations from the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) to the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System).

According to Kouichi Kawamoto, the producer of Switch 2, there were numerous suggestions for a suitable name, but it proved challenging to pick the perfect one. In fact, some concepts under consideration included ‘Super Nintendo Switch.’

In the end, Nintendo opted against naming the successor to the Switch as Super Switch, as it would evoke memories of the NES and SNES. Kawamoto clarified that one reason for this was due to the SNES’s inability to play NES games, which had a significant impact on their decision-making process. Contrarily, the upcoming Switch 2 will be compatible with games designed for the original Switch.

The original Super NES couldn’t play games from the NES console that came before it, and since Switch 2 is capable of playing games from the Switch, it seemed inconsistent to follow the same naming pattern as Super NES. Instead, the developers wanted players to view Switch 2 as an upgraded system by Nintendo, rather than focusing on its technical specifications. Therefore, they decided to name it Nintendo Switch 2, aiming for it to become the new standard for the Nintendo Switch family of consoles.

In his own words, Director Takuhiro Dohta explained the rationale behind naming the latest console as Switch 2. This choice was made because the name clearly distinguishes it from the original Switch, yet it still allows for compatibility with its games.

Initially, our goal with Switch 2 was to create a platform catering to diverse gamers. That objective remains the same, even as we transition from the original Switch to Switch 2, according to Dohta.

Instead of crafting an experience solely for advanced hardware enthusiasts, we aimed to design one that caters to a wide array of players. Consequently, we sought a name that clearly signifies to prospective buyers that if they’re contemplating purchasing a Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 is the latest system on the market.

Despite numerous suggestions, we faced a tough time reaching an agreement due to the variety of opinions. However, through extensive discussions, we eventually found common ground and decided, in the end, that the sequel to Nintendo Switch would be the best choice.

The anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is set to surpass its predecessor in numerous aspects. It boasts advanced hardware powered by a custom Nvidia-designed chip, offering a larger screen with improved resolution and increased frame rates. The Joy-Con 2 controllers are also enlarged, and the console features an innovative system for attaching and detaching these controllers.

On June 5, I’ll be excitedly picking up my new console from the shelves, accompanied by a slew of launch-day games. One of those is none other than the freshly-revealed “Mario Kart World”, and there are also updates for Switch classics like “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom”. Can’t wait!
