Initially, when the Nintendo Switch debuted, it was generally well-received by the broader gaming community. Yet, a short while after its release, some problems emerged, particularly concerning the Joy-Con’s analog sticks drifting intermittently.
As a dedicated enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly keeping tabs on the latest updates regarding the Nintendo Switch 2. Interestingly, Nintendo has maintained a noticeable silence about the potential resurfacing of the issue that initially surfaced with the original console. In a recent roundtable discussion, Tetsuya Sasaki, General Manager at Nintendo’s Technology Development Division and Senior Director at its Technology Development Department, delved deep into the extensive redesign process behind the Joy-Con 2 controllers.
Sasaki mentioned that the freshly designed Joy-Con 2 controllers for Nintendo Switch 2 offer an enhanced experience with larger and more fluid movements. He didn’t discuss any potential reoccurrence of stick drifting.
As an enthusiastic admirer, I can’t help but share some exciting news about the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. Kouichi Kawamoto, one of the producers, highlighted a significant improvement – they have significantly reduced the noise level in comparison to its predecessor, the original Pro Controller.
During the Q&A, Kawamoto mentioned that while the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller may seem identical to its predecessor at a glance, it’s actually been completely redesigned. Specifically, the left and right control sticks now operate quietly, even when moved swiftly to the edge, earning us the nickname ‘smooth-gliding sticks.'” (From a gamer’s perspective)
Sasaki additionally discussed the “streamlined joysticks,” revealing that Nintendo has been striving to create what many consider the “ultimate controller.” However, whether their aim has been achieved as they intended remains uncertain and can only be determined when the console is launched.
In his words, Sasaki mentioned that they’ve been striving to minimize the sensation of jolting when tilting these devices, which some refer to as ‘smooth-gliding sticks’. Interestingly, Nintendo has been diligently working on an extended project aimed at creating the ultimate controller, and this research has been ongoing for quite some time.
Based on a 2023 patent filing, it’s suggested that the analog sticks for the Nintendo Switch 2 could undergo significant improvements. This patent details a potential technology utilizing a “magnetorheological fluid,” which is intriguing.
The patent suggests that the liquid’s thickness can adapt according to the player’s joystick manipulation. This resembles the tech found in external controllers equipped with Hall Effect joysticks, which utilize magnetic fields to determine the location of the analog sticks.
On June 5th, you’ll find the new Nintendo Switch 2 available in stores. Alongside its release, several games will debut, among them the first-party game “Mario Kart World.” A bundle offering a copy of this game will be sold for $499.99, while the standard console itself costs $449.99.
