Nintendo Switch 2 eShop is Now Live Ahead of Console’s June 5 Launch

A day prior to the release of Nintendo Switch 2, the company has unveiled its digital marketplace – the eShop – for the console. Though the eShop isn’t accessible to everyone at present, journalists and those who received early access to the device can now utilize it to activate game codes, as reported by VideoGamer. This applies even to the pre-installed Mario Kart World game that comes with the Switch 2 package.

It’s important to mention that many games for the Switch 2 are currently unavailable for purchase and play, as they don’t have release dates before June 5 or later. However, with the launch of the eShop, the day one update for the Switch 2 is now active, allowing those who already own the console to start using it.

Tomorrow marks the debut of the Nintendo Switch 2, featuring an exciting lineup of launch titles such as “Mario Kart World”, “Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour”, and “Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition”. In addition, upgraded versions of popular Switch games like “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” and “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” are also available for the Switch 2. These upgrades come with a variety of performance enhancements, as well as some games receiving new content.

It’s worth noting that Nintendo has provided updates for various first-party games on the Switch 2, enabling play and potentially enhancing performance due to its superior hardware compared to the original Switch. For a deeper dive into these updates, be sure to check out our coverage.

In terms of horsepower, CD Projekt RED has highlighted that the faster storage and increased RAM on the Switch 2, combined with Nvidia’s DLSS technology, gives it a significant edge over the previous generation consoles – the PS4 and Xbox One. Charles Tremblay, the studio’s VP of technology, also discussed the difficulties in porting Cyberpunk 2077 to the Switch 2.

Tremblay clarified that Cyberpunk was designed for x86 hardware based on old PC architecture. Consequently, the game’s creation involved significant alterations because the underlying engine and shaders (visual effects) were written in a distinct language. The conversion process required changing some HLSL to GLSL, as the architecture of the platform being used, which is not the Switch 2, is very different from what Cyberpunk was originally designed for.

As stated by Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa during a financial report, the company anticipates selling approximately 15 million units of their latest console. Furukawa mentioned that these estimates are somewhat modest considering that the new console and its accompanying games are pricier compared to the initial Nintendo Switch.

Contrastingly, DFC Intelligence posits that the launch of the Switch 2 could potentially be the industry’s most significant yet, primarily due to the delay of GTA 6 until next year. This implies a reduction in console sales that would have been generated by the game’s release.
