Nintendo has shared details about the accessibility-focused features of GameChat, a new feature on the upcoming Switch 2. These features have been unveiled via updates on Nintendo’s smartphone app, Nintendo Today. Notably, among the voice and video communication options in the Switch 2’s suite of GameChat features, text-to-speech support will also be included.
In simpler terms, when Switch 2 users join a voice chat on GameChat, they can type messages which the console will then verbally communicate for them in the voice chat. This could prove very useful for individuals dealing with social anxiety, shyness, or speech impairments.
As a privacy-conscious gamer, I appreciate not having to rely on the microphone when using the new Switch 2. It’s great to know that Nintendo might also support physical keyboards for better communication, just like they did with the original Switch. However, it’s important to note that this feature hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.
For those players who might struggle with understanding conversation in GameChat, the new Switch 2 model will feature real-time voice chat transcription. This means that as other players speak through GameChat, their words will automatically appear in a sidebar panel, similar to live streams on YouTube or Twitch.
GameChat was initially unveiled as a new feature during Nintendo’s April Direct focused on the Nintendo Switch 2. During this presentation, it was announced that the updated C button on the JoyCon 2 controller could activate the GameChat interface. This interface enables players to engage in group voice chats with up to three other individuals. In addition, players can stream their gameplay for others to observe. The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is also expected to come with a camera accessory that will facilitate video chatting among users.
Nintendo has identified GameChat as one of the key highlights of the Switch 2, with its lead developer, Sumikazu Ono, stating, “During the development of GameChat, we envisioned it becoming a defining feature for the Switch 2.” This was further solidified when Nintendo executives had the chance to test out GameChat. Witnessing their initial reactions and seamless experience with video chatting and sharing game screens left us convinced that this functionality is effective.”
As a gamer, I’m thrilled to share that the developers have crafted GameChat to seamlessly blend into the overall gaming experience on the platform, making it feel like an integral part of the game itself. When the Switch 2 drops, you’ll have the chance to try out GameChat for free during its launch period. However, starting from March 31, 2026, if you wish to keep using this service, you’ll need to sign up for Nintendo Switch Online.
The anticipated release date for the Nintendo Switch 2 is set for June 5. Not only can it play existing Switch games, but also comes equipped with a selection of exclusive games upon its debut, such as “Mario Kart World” and “Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition”.
GameChat offers a text-to-speech feature. Activate this, and you’ll be able to write messages, and the system will then read them aloud for you. It hasn’t been specifically stated, but it’s likely that USB keyboards will work as well (since the Switch 1 already accommodates USB keyboards for text input).

GameChat includes real-time captions functionality. This feature transcribes all conversations and presents them as text in a floating “dialogue box” on the screen.
