Nintendo Switch 2 Games Could Include Spiritual Successor to 2005 GameCube Classic

As a gamer who’s been around since the dawn of time (okay, maybe not that long), I can say with confidence that 2005 was a golden era for video games. The sheer number of classics released that year still gives me goosebumps. So, hearing about a spiritual successor to Chibi-Robo!, one of the lesser-known gems from that time, has me all nostalgic and excited.

From 2005, a timeless Nintendo GameCube game is set to receive a sequel with similar spirit for both personal computers and gaming consoles. As of now, the specific consoles have not been disclosed, but given its history and projected launch timing, it’s quite likely that the Switch 2 could be among them.

2005 stands out in the world of video games as an exceptionally rich year for releases. Titles such as Resident Evil 4, God of War, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Forza Motorsport, Guitar Hero, Nintendogs, Shadow of the Colossus, Sniper Elite, Battlefield 2, Mario Kart DS, Call of Duty 2, Jade Empire, Guild Wars, Devil May Cry 3, F.E.A.R, Ninja Gaiden Black, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Civilization IV, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Burnout Revenge, Psychonauts, Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Animal Crossing: Wild World, and Star Wars: Battlefront II were all unveiled. The list continues, but the essence is that 2005 was a golden age for gaming, much like the year preceding it, 2004.

2005 saw several games gaining underground fame and eventually becoming cult classics. One such game is Chibi-Robo!, developed by Skip. Initially released exclusively for the GameCube, this Nintendo-published title also made an appearance on the Wii in 2009. The game garnered positive reviews, as indicated by its 75 rating on Metacritic. However, it didn’t achieve significant commercial success. Nevertheless, the game inspired a series that produced four sequels: one each in 2007, 2009, 2013, and 2015. For the remainder of its lifespan with Nintendo, the series was primarily developed for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS platforms.

Regrettably, followers of the series won’t get to see it return, but that doesn’t mean there’s no good news! Tiny Wonder Studios, comprising talent from Skip (including the previous series director), is developing a spiritual successor titled koROBO. This will be their inaugural project and, thanks to its successful Kickstarter campaign, it’s now set for production and release on PC and modern gaming consoles at an unspecified future date.

Below, you can read more about the upcoming game, courtesy of an official story synopsis:

In the heart of Brooklyn, within the bustling metropolis of New York City, ten-year-old Tom is celebrating his birthday. Suddenly, a gift arrives from his long-absent father. As Tom unwraps it, he finds not the latest robotic gadget, but a cheap knockoff model named koROBO. Despite his initial disappointment, koROBO soon proves invaluable, helping with chores, schoolwork, and even acting as a friend by playing games and reading comics with Tom. What unexpected events will unfold for Tom, his family, and possibly the world, with koROBO’s arrival? It seems that even the smallest hero could play a significant role in an extraordinary destiny.

As a seasoned video game enthusiast with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I’m always on the lookout for something fresh and engaging that takes me on a new adventure. From the moment I read the synopsis for koROBO, I knew it was going to be a game worth exploring. The fact that this story unfolds within the confines of Tom’s family apartment in Brooklyn, New York, immediately caught my attention. The setting is familiar yet unique, offering an intriguing blend of everyday life and fantasy.
