Nintendo Switch 2 is Powered by a Custom Chip Made by Nvidia

Following the disclosure of several key features of the Nintendo Switch 2 during its recent Direct presentation, the company has now provided additional details about some of the console’s technical specifications. On their official website, they have unveiled the technical specifications for the Switch 2, clarifying that it will be powered by a processor made by Nvidia.

It’s not yet clear what specific clock speeds we might see from this SoC, but it seems to be a custom-made chip from Nvidia, setting the Switch 2 apart as the only current console equipped with an Nvidia processor. Intriguingly, both the Xbox Series X/S and the PS5 rely on AMD’s chips for their power.

As a gamer, I’ve been keeping an eye on the details for the upcoming Switch 2 line-up, especially after the recent Direct presentation. Notably, the Switch 2 is expected to come with a 5,220 mAh battery. It’s intriguing that the playtime could range from 2 to 6.5 hours, depending on the games you choose to play.

The information aligns with rumors dating back to January suggesting that the Switch 2 might utilize Nvidia’s Tegra 239 processor. Although not as potent as other consoles or contemporary gaming platforms, the enhancements applied to the Tegra 239 probably enable Nintendo to extract considerably more power from this chip compared to what developers could achieve using an ordinary version of it.

According to the rumors, the SoC’s GPU operates at a frequency of about 561 MHz (megahertz), which equates to approximately 1.71 teraflops (trillion calculations per second) when it’s in handheld mode. In docked mode, however, its speed increases to around 1 GHz (gigahertz), or about 3.1 teraflops.

On June 5, you’ll find the Nintendo Switch 2 in stores. For additional information, take a look at our coverage from the Direct event.
