The highly anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5 is expected to make a significant impact within the gaming industry. As suggested by DFC Intelligence, an analysis firm specializing in video games, this new console could potentially be the most significant launch the industry has experienced thus far. According to WCCFTech’s report, DFC Intelligence predicts that Nintendo will achieve sales of 16 million units of the Switch 2 by the end of 2025.
Based on the company’s report, their optimism about the Switch 2 selling well is due to the delay of Grand Theft Auto 6 from its Fall 2025 release date to May 26, 2026. Additionally, Nintendo typically makes conservative predictions for hardware and software sales, which is why DFC Intelligence anticipates that the console will perform well this year. To provide some perspective, Nintendo expects to sell 15 million units of the Switch 2 in its first year.
Regarding labeling the Switch 2’s debut as the most significant console launch in the market, the company attributes this to the absence of GTA 6 in 2021, which could bolster sales of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S hardware. Consequently, DFC predicts that console sales for Sony and Microsoft will drop further as the year progresses due to this factor.
According to DFC’s predictions, the Japanese market is anticipated to excel, as console game sales are projected to increase by 25%. This growth is partly attributed to the availability of a Japan-exclusive edition of Switch 2 in the country at a lower price compared to the region-free version that supports multiple languages.
For the upcoming years and beyond, DFC anticipates that the launch of GTA 6 will significantly increase console sales, marking a new era of expansion in the gaming industry. By the year 2029, it’s projected by this analysis firm that over 100 million units of Switch 2 will be sold, positioning Nintendo’s platform as the go-to choice for third-party collaborators as well.
At a recent shareholder meeting, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa mentioned that for now, the Nintendo Switch 2 is set at $449.99. However, he cautioned that if tariffs on US imports change, they might need to adjust the price. Additionally, he emphasized that their projection of selling 15 million units of the Switch 2 doesn’t originate from any production constraints.
Furukawa stated that the sales projection was not influenced by any restrictions in our manufacturing capabilities. Additionally, factors such as US tariffs and economic recession worries have not impacted our predictions. To reach our goal of producing 15 million units, we’ll need to manufacture more than that quantity instead.
Nintendo affirmed that although the Switch 2 is anticipated to be significant for them, they will still develop more games for the initial Nintendo Switch too.
