Nintendo Switch 2 legal documents confirm some serious tech upgrades

It’s no secret that we expected the Nintendo Switch 2 to outshine its predecessor, and newly disclosed court documents hint at an abundance of exciting new features for the forthcoming gaming device.

As Nintendo prepares for the upcoming release of Switch 2 towards the end of this year, they are diligently working on the various backstage tasks required for a product launch.

This encompasses multiple submissions to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), as pointed out by The Verge. These submissions involve a host of technical enhancements, impacting aspects ranging from charging mechanisms to improvements in Amiibo functionality.

To begin with, it’s been clearly indicated that the new Switch 2 model will be compatible with Amiibo figurines. This is evident from the documents, which show that the device includes the same Near Field Communication (NFC) support in the right Joycon as the initial console.

It’s expected that the Switch 2 may come with improved Wi-Fi, as it seems to be transitioning from Wi-Fi 5 to Wi-Fi 6. This upgrade could potentially offer a bandwidth of up to 80MHz, although it has only been tested for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, not the 6GHz frequency band.

It was generally believed that the Switch 2 could be charged through USB-C ports located on both its upper and lower parts. Now, this assumption has been made official through these recent filings.

It remains unclear if the Switch console charges more quickly when connected to its docking station for charging purposes.

The documents submitted to the FCC reveal a power adapter capable of reaching voltages as high as 20 volts, which surpasses the 15 volts provided by the initial Switch adapter. However, without information about the amperage, we can’t calculate the charging speed.

A stronger adapter implies that the Switch 2 may offer enhanced performance while docked, an assumption gamers have made ever since the console’s unveiling. Yet, it remains unofficially confirmed at this point.

As a gamer, I can’t wait to dive back into the world of gaming with the new Switch 2! It’s no secret that the original Switch was a powerhouse when connected to a TV, and with the upgraded capabilities of the Switch 2, it seems like we might be seeing this feature return. This is especially exciting when considering some of the graphically demanding games on the platform, where the enhanced performance could make all the difference!

In addition to the usual Nintendo games like a fresh version of Mario Kart, there are speculated launch titles for this console that also feature games such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Elden Ring, and Tekken 8.

Given the significant improvement in graphics necessary to run these games, it’s likely that the Switch 2 will need the additional power provided when it’s connected to a dock.
