Nintendo has revealed one of the major new features for the Switch 2: the C Button. With this, gamers can engage in conversation with other Switch 2 users through a feature called Game Chat, which aligns with recent whispers suggesting an in-console voice chat function built into the operating system itself.
As a player, when I tap the C button, I’m greeted with the Game Chat User Interface. From there, I have the exciting opportunity to engage in a voice chat with as many as three other fellow gamers. While we can use conventional voice chat, what sets Game Chat apart is its additional features, such as the ability to stream our gameplay live.
Regardless of the specific games being played, every participant will have the freedom to broadcast their gameplay sessions. Whether it’s the same game or different titles, this shared experience allows them to interact while catching glimpses of each other’s activities through live streams. Additionally, the size of these streams can be adjusted at will, enabling players to peek into their friends’ activities during voice chats.
In the Switch 2, the Game Chat’s ultimate function includes video chat capability. This means players can not only talk but also see each other, thanks to the built-in camera. Essentially, it works like a webcam. The camera software is sophisticated enough to automatically place players’ faces onto the game stream without requiring users to understand chroma keys for transparency.
Various kinds of games employ video chat in diverse manners. For instance, a game like Mario Party may display the player within a miniature window alongside their in-game avatar. The Switch 2 Camera is set to hit store shelves concurrently with the new console.
To enjoy Game Chat on your Nintendo Switch, you’ll need a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online. Fortunately, the company has granted a complimentary trial period for players who don’t wish to subscribe yet, lasting until March 31, 2026. Notably, this feature can also be managed through the Switch’s parental controls application.
