Although specifics about Nintendo’s future console, tentatively known as Switch 2, are currently limited, a recently published patent hints at the possibility of built-in online voice chat being integrated into the console itself. This feature was noticed by WCCFTech and appears to involve the system for seamless integration of voice chat within the operating system.
One of the ideas presented in the patent application includes the feature of proximity-driven voice chat. In simpler terms, this means you could interact vocally online with other players based on the spatial proximity of your characters within the game’s virtual environment.
In this scenario, the farther a player is from you, the less clearly their voice will come through compared to those who are closer. This concept is reminiscent of many multiplayer games, including battle royale titles like “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds: Battlegrounds.
On the new Nintendo Switch 2, we can expect that voice chat won’t require a separate smartphone app because it will have built-in OS support for voice communication. Unlike the original Nintendo Switch, which relies on the Nintendo Switch Online app for voice chat during multiplayer games like Splatoon 3.
The patent may subtly suggest one possible function for the newly observed C button on the upcoming JoyCon controllers of the Switch 2. This button might serve as a quick-access feature for voice chat, enabling users to utilize an integrated microphone within the JoyCons for seamless communication during gameplay.
Although Nintendo presented the Switch 2 in January, they haven’t disclosed any details about it yet. The company is saving that information for an upcoming Direct showcase on April 2 at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET. During this event, it’s likely that we will see a preview of the console’s hardware, possibly some games too, as well as its release date and price.
It is confirmed that the next-generation Nintendo Switch (Switch 2) will boast a larger screen, accompanied by enlarged JoyCon controllers. The console’s design will also undergo an update, showcasing the distinctive red and blue hues from the original Switch as accents in its new look.
Nintendo has made it known that the Switch 2 is going to be completely compatible with the initial Switch model. This means that both digital games bought on the eShop and physical game discs will work seamlessly on the new system.
For now, experts are estimating that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 might cost around $399. This pricing decision is strategic to ensure that fans of the initial Switch don’t feel priced out. As SuperData Research co-founder Joost van Dreunen explains, this price strikes a “critical psychological balance,” allowing for premium hardware appeal while still ensuring accessibility within the broader market.
Although Nintendo hasn’t officially announced any new games specifically for the Switch 2, they’ve hinted at a fresh installment of Mario Kart coming to this upcoming console. It’s been whispered that numerous third-party games are being created for the Switch 2, such as Fable, Forza Horizon 5, Diablo 4, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. For further information, here’s a list of 15 games that are allegedly in development for the Switch 2.
