As a seasoned Nintendo enthusiast with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and skepticism upon hearing about the potential advancements in the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The patent’s mention of AI-powered DLSS upscaling technology has me intrigued – if implemented correctly, it could revolutionize the way games are played on portable consoles.
However, I’ve been around long enough to remember the infamous “red ring of death” fiasco with the Xbox 360, so I can’t help but worry that this new technology might bring its own set of challenges. The idea of a game fitting onto a smaller cartridge due to AI upscaling is fascinating, but as someone who still has an original Nintendo Game Boy in my collection, I can’t shake off the feeling that something seems too good to be true.
But hey, if it means we get a portable console with 4K graphics, I’ll take it! Who knows, maybe one day we’ll even see a portable game console that doesn’t require batteries or an outlet to play – now that would be something worth waiting for!
With Nintendo’s reveal of the new Nintendo Switch model drawing nearer, a recent sneak peek at its features was unintentionally disclosed. Further digging into this leak, a fresh patent submitted by Nintendo sheds additional light on the upcoming console.
According to gaming insider Laura Kate Dale, recently uncovered patent documents on BlueSky provide insights into the functioning of the Nintendo Switch 2’s hardware decoder. These patents can be found on the official US patents website. The design appears to show a game’s engine collaborating with a neural network to produce graphics at enhanced resolutions.
The patent suggests that the Switch 2 may incorporate a unique version of Nvidia’s DLSS technology, which is powered by a custom chip developed by Nvidia. This innovation could potentially allow the Switch 2 to run games at higher resolutions than the current Nintendo hardware can manage. For example, some of the illustrations in the patent application depict scaling 540p images up to 1080p resolution.
One of Dale’s interesting observations is that this technique could help decrease game sizes, making them compatible with smaller storage devices like “lesser capacity physical media.” For instance, a game with high-definition textures might require a 60 GB download, but its 1080p version may only need 20 GB, which would fit within the 32GB capacity of a Nintendo Switch cartridge, the maximum size currently produced for the Switch 1.
It’s been speculated, but not confirmed by Nintendo themselves, that they might reveal the successor to the Nintendo Switch prior to April.
Yesterday, a fresh Nintendo patent was unveiled suggesting that the Switch 2 may employ AI upscaling technology similar to DLSS (Nvidia’s chip) to boost game resolution output, as opposed to running games at higher internal resolutions natively. [link]

One intriguing aspect that stands out following a thorough read is the mention of a specific application scenario: minimizing total game sizes. This strategy is aimed at accommodating contemporary games on “compact physical storage media” such as Nintendo Switch cartridges, where costs rise significantly with increased storage capacity.

As an enthusiast, I’d like to highlight an intriguing concept: A game with native 4K textures might require a hefty 60GB download, but opting for a 1080p native version could only need 20GB. This means it could fit on a 32GB Switch Cartridge – the maximum size currently produced by Nintendo for the Switch 1. The ingenious part is that they’re planning to perform a 4X upscale in real-time on the device itself, ensuring high-quality visuals without the need for the larger file size.
