Nintendo has set the price for the upcoming Switch 2, but its president, Shuntaro Furukawa, mentioned during a recent investor call (reported by Yahoo News and translated by X user Genki_JPN) that there’s a possibility the cost could increase in the future due to changes in US tariffs on imports. For now, Nintendo is focusing more on making the Switch 2 popular for immediate success.
Looking ahead, Furukawa indicated that there could be a potential adjustment in the console’s price due to ongoing US tariffs impacting imports in the country. “Our primary focus now is to swiftly increase the popularity of the Switch 2 hardware,” said Furukawa. “Should assumptions about tariffs significantly shift, we plan to evaluate necessary price alterations and implement them after considering all relevant factors.
It’s important to point out that Furukawa merely discusses possible price modifications without elaborating on whether the costs for the Switch 2 and its accompanying items would rise or fall. Given the existing tariff situation, it seems plausible that increases in prices might occur after the console’s initial goal of rapid popularization is achieved. At present, the Switch 2 retails at $449.99, while a bundle including Mario Kart World can be purchased for $499.99.
During the same earnings conference, Nintendo announced their projected operating profit for the financial year concluding in March 2026 will amount to approximately 320 billion yen. This represents a significant rise of 13.3% compared to their forecasts for the preceding fiscal year. In addition, they anticipate selling around 15 million units of the Switch 2 and 45 million units of related software.
Ever since the pre-orders for the Switch 2 became available in April, there’s been a significant demand for this console. Furukawa announced that over 2 million individuals in Japan alone had registered for the lottery system Nintendo is using to ensure fair chances for pre-orders. He also mentioned that the massive interest could potentially mean some people won’t be able to acquire a Switch 2 on its June 5 release date. He stated that Nintendo intends to ship a large quantity of the console in the future, expressing regret for those who may have to wait longer to get their hands on it.
The company has revised its Buy Guide for the Switch 2, indicating that there might be a delay in delivering pre-orders due to overwhelming demand. On their website, they expressed their excitement over the public’s anticipation for the Nintendo Switch 2. They stated that while they will strive to meet orders as soon as the product is released, it may not arrive by June 5th as initially planned. Users should expect their order confirmation emails to come after the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, and the shipping date will be confirmed once a purchase is made.
If significant changes occur in the tariff situation, we might need to increase the price of the Nintendo Switch 2 in order to focus on quickly making it popular.
