Next week, the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is set to make its grand debut during a dedicated Nintendo Direct broadcast. While Nintendo has been mum about the new system since early this year, recent whispers suggest that it could hit shelves as early as June. Insider Gaming’s latest scoop hints at this possibility, with speculation running rampant among fans for months that a launch might occur in May or June due to hands-on experiences planned throughout April. The more intriguing aspect of the report discloses Nintendo’s software plan through 2025.
Based on reports from Insider Gaming’s sources at this year’s Game Developers Conference, Nintendo appears to be adopting a three-stage approach for their software releases. The initial phase will focus on the system launch, and it seems that the majority of the games released during this period will be first-party titles. Historically, Nintendo has prioritized one significant first-party game at launch, often paired with a smaller title designed to showcase the system’s capabilities; for instance, when the Switch was launched, it came with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, 1-2-Switch, and Snipperclips (a digital exclusive). However, there were also some third-party games available, such as Super Bomberman R and Just Dance 2017.
It seems that while there might be some third-party games available during the launch of Nintendo Switch 2, they’re not expected to make a big impact initially. Instead, larger third-party games are anticipated in a subsequent phase, possibly starting around June, as many developers are reportedly waiting for development kits for the system. This could potentially be when we might see games like “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” and “Final Fantasy VII Remake,” but keep in mind that this is all speculation.
The third and concluding stage of 2025 is referred to as the holiday season. At this point, specifics have yet to be disclosed, but it’s reasonable to anticipate some significant exclusive content within this time span. In the year that the initial Switch was launched, this is when Nintendo unveiled Super Mario Odyssey. Since then, we haven’t had a full 3D Mario game, and fans have been speculating for months that the Switch 2 might debut with a new Mario Kart, followed by a 3D Mario title towards the end of the year. Unlike the original Switch, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe wasn’t launched simultaneously, but it was released just a few weeks afterward.
Currently, it’s advisable to approach this information cautiously as it might be speculative. Nevertheless, it aligns with Pocketpair’s recent statements at GDC. Their community manager mentioned to IGN that he was seeking details about the new system, but couldn’t obtain any. This could be plausible if developer kits aren’t being distributed for another couple of months. With the Nintendo Direct scheduled for April 2nd just around the corner, we’ll likely learn a great deal more about what lies ahead in the near future.
