As a seasoned gamer with memories of the frustrating hunt for a PlayStation 5 still fresh in my mind, I can’t help but feel a glimmer of optimism when it comes to the rumored production numbers of the Nintendo Switch 2. If the reports are true and Nintendo plans to produce about 2.5 times more consoles than they did for the original Switch, that could mean fewer sleepless nights spent refreshing online store pages in hopes of snagging one.
Should you’ve attempted to acquire a PlayStation 5 in autumn of 2020, you’d be well aware of the challenges involved in snagging a console at its initial release. Similarly, Nintendo enthusiasts are justifiably concerned about facing similar hurdles with their upcoming console; however, there appears to be some optimism. As per a recent rumor posted by user ninspider on Famiboards (via Gaming Leaks and Rumors), Nintendo is expected to have a significantly larger supply of consoles compared to the original Switch launch. If the information provided by ninspider holds true, Nintendo could potentially have close to 7 million consoles available during the launch period. This is nearly triple the number (2.74 million) of consoles they made accessible in March 2017.
During a recent question-and-answer session with investors this year, Nintendo’s president Shuntaro Furukawa acknowledged concerns about scalpers and resellers potentially causing shortages for the new console, similar to what happened with the PS5. Furukawa emphasized that their top priority is producing an adequate supply to match customer demand, suggesting that they are indeed making a considerable effort to ensure plentiful stock during the first month of release. However, whether this will be enough consoles to satisfy demand remains uncertain.
Similar to any unverified gossip, it’s advisable to approach this news with a dose of skepticism. At present, the details surrounding what is being referred to as the “Nintendo Switch 2” are scant. Nintendo has been tight-lipped about their new console, only divulging a few pieces of information over the past few years. We can confirm that the system will be compatible with existing Nintendo Switch games and will carry on the current Nintendo Account system. Nintendo Switch Online services will also persist in this upcoming era, ensuring that classic games like those from Super Nintendo and Game Boy remain playable on the new platform. A complete unveiling for the console is expected to occur before March 2025, and Nintendo has hinted at a shorter gap between the console’s announcement and release compared to the Switch.
It seems we’re now anticipating a launch of Nintendo’s latest system in the latter part of 2025, with an earlier release being quite improbable compared to expectations. Fans had initially hoped for a simultaneous debut around the time of the current Switch (launched in March 2017), but that idea appears to be fading away. Given Nintendo’s announcement of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition set for release that month, it seems they would have already made an announcement if the new console was coming out at the same time. Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait too much longer for the official unveiling of the launch date!
