Nintendo Switch 2 System Update Seemingly Fixes Issues With Some Switch 1 Games

The latest version of the software for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite is now active. Whether you’re using the original model or the newer Nintendo Switch 2, a notification to upgrade to version 20.1.5 will appear when you next power up your device. At this point, Nintendo has not disclosed many specifics about what changes to anticipate. They have released a list of modifications, but it doesn’t provide much insight. However, it appears that the update addresses some game issues that were occurring on the new system, particularly games that utilize the Carbon Engine. We will share more information once Nintendo releases the official patch notes on their website.

Ver. 20.1.5 (Released June 18, 2025)

  • General system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience.

In my review for Nintendo Switch 2, I encountered compatibility issues with several Switch 1 games, including the Jurassic Park Classic Games Collection. This game, among others, is a reissue of an older title that uses the Carbon Engine developed by Limited Run Games. During testing, the game crashed immediately. However, shortly after launch, it was revealed that Limited Run Games had identified a problem with the Carbon Engine and reported it to Nintendo. Following the 20.1.5 system update, I retested the Jurassic Park Classic Games Collection, and it now runs smoothly, just as it did on the original Switch.

It’s uncertain if the recent update addressing the Carbon Engine issue on the Switch 2 has resolved all compatibility problems for every game that uses this engine. According to Fairhurst, a specific piece of code related to video playback on the original Switch was identified as potentially causing troubles for games from various publishers. If this fix is relatively straightforward, it might lead to more games becoming backward compatible with the Switch 2. As of now, Nintendo has not released an updated list of Switch 1 games facing issues on the Switch 2, but it’s possible that this problematic code has already been rectified.

It appears that Nintendo and their collaborators are putting in a great effort backstage to enhance backwards compatibility for the Switch 2. This means that most of the existing Switch games can be played on the new system without any hassles. In fact, recent updates on older games have been rolling out frequently over the past fortnight, with developers even incorporating some additional user-friendly upgrades. For those who are purchasing a Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time but missed out on the original, this could be an excellent reason to explore and acquire many of the games that have been launched since the last eight years.
