The long-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 has finally been officially unveiled, and it’s hard to believe given all the speculation over the years. At this point, though, there isn’t much concrete information available about the console. Many of its key specifications are yet to be disclosed, with a Nintendo Direct broadcast scheduled for April to provide more details. It’s likely that the pricing will be one of the aspects revealed during this presentation, although industry experts have already hinted at potential costs.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve been keeping tabs on the chatter about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. From what I’ve gathered from various analysts talking to IGN, it seems like we can expect the new console to retail around $400 at launch. That’s $100 more than the original Switch, which debuted at a cool $300, and slightly pricier than the current Switch OLED model, available for $350. So, it looks like we might be in for a bit of a splurge if we want to get our hands on the next-gen Nintendo console.
Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games has stated that a game console needs to cost around $400 to be successful, but he feels that the reveal trailer does not show enough compelling features to justify a price tag of $450. This sentiment appears to be shared by other analysts such as Piers Harding-Rolls and Mat Piscatella from Circana.
It’s possible that the Switch 2 might be priced higher, potentially ranging from $450 to $500. Rhys Elliot of MIDiA suggests this could occur due to potential initial supply issues, causing Nintendo to set a higher launch price for the console.
If there’s a shortage of the Switch 2 during its debut, Nintendo might increase the price, according to the analyst. Early buyers are expected to accept the higher cost, and if the console is bound to sell out regardless, Nintendo may reason, ‘Why not raise the price?’ The analyst also speculated that Sony and Microsoft might have regretted launching their base PS5 and Series X consoles at $500. They could have potentially charged $600 or more initially. However, the analyst eventually concurred that a $400 price point would probably be the ideal for Nintendo.
In essence, Piscatella proposed that the launch price of the console may not significantly influence its initial sales. He explained, “Early buyers aren’t particularly price-conscious, and prices can always be reduced later. Naturally, people would hope for a lower price than what it will initially be set at.
Over time, console prices have often changed, but this isn’t typically the case with Nintendo, particularly during the Switch generation. For example, none of the three Switch models have received any price reductions. The standard Switch costs $300, the OLED model $350, and the Lite model $200 – these are the exact prices at which they were first released. It’s likely that when the Switch 2 is launched, its price will remain steady until the end of its product lifecycle.
