Nintendo Switch 2 Will Use Game-Key Cards to Sell Physical Copies of Larger Games

In addition to the Switch 2, Nintendo has also unveiled information about a novel method they’ll employ for distributing video games. Known as Game-Key Cards, this system primarily relies on a digital code that allows users to download their chosen game.

Even after downloading the game onto your Switch 2 console, you’ll also need to insert the Game-Key Card into its card slot. The downloaded games will require sufficient space within the Switch 2 itself, or on the inserted microSD Expandable Memory card, for smooth playability.

By employing this method, Nintendo might be capable of offering games that exceed their conventional Game Card capacity. Such titles, such as the space-demanding “Destiny 2”, could potentially find their way onto the market.

In a similar fashion as regular Nintendo Switch 2 games, Game-Key Cards will come in distinctive red-hued packaging. Consistent with the revamped design of Switch 2 game cards, these keys will adopt the new red color, signifying their compatibility only with the updated Nintendo Switch 2 system.

To begin playing a game purchased with a Game-Key Card for the first time, an internet connection is essential. Once this initial setup is complete, simply ensuring the correct Game-Key Card is inserted will be sufficient for continued gameplay.

As of now, Nintendo has not revealed whether any of the upcoming games for the Switch 2 will utilize Game-Key Cards. The release date for this console is set for June 5th.
