As a seasoned gamer with memories etched deep into the pixels of my youth, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia upon hearing about the imminent release of The Epyx Games: Sports Collection on the Nintendo Switch. Back in the 1980s, when I was just a lad with an Atari 2600 under my bed, these games were whispered about in hushed tones, like mythical treasures hidden away in some digital Valhalla.
This week, a selection of 1980s-style video games will be getting updated versions for play on the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED. Back in the 80s, Nintendo became well-known in the gaming world thanks to the launch of the NES, although others were also active at that time. Few people were actually playing games then, so these classic titles are a great opportunity for many to experience them again. Come November 28, eight games from this era will be reintroduced as remastered editions!
On November 28, 2024, Pixel Games is set to release The Epyx Games: Sports Collection on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED. This compilation includes the following titles: Summer Games from 1984, Summer Games II from 1985, Winter Games from 1985, World Games from 1986, Championship Wrestling from 1986, California Games from 1987, The Games – Winter Edition from 1988, and The Games – Summer Edition from 1988.
In the ’80s, the champion game for sports on the C64 was named Epyx. Now, you can experience more than 50 various athletic and sporting events from eight of Epyx’s timeless classics in this updated collection. Among them is California Games, the top-selling title.
The official description goes on: “Bring home the victory across a variety of sports such as skiing, skateboarding, wrestling, roller skating, BMX, and bobsled, among others. Epyx games were renowned for their exceptional animations and realistic gameplay that was both engaging and accurate. Some games were even developed in collaboration with former Olympic athletes to ensure an authentic gaming experience.
From my perspective as a gaming enthusiast, the modernized versions of these games offer an array of enhancements compared to their original counterparts. You’ll find an assortment of filters, such as retro CRT filters and scaling options, that bring a nostalgic touch to your gaming experience. The game manuals are now seamlessly integrated within the games themselves, allowing for easy access when needed.
At the moment, it’s unclear what the final price of this collection will be when it becomes available on the Nintendo eShop. Since it hasn’t been officially announced yet, we can only guess that it might fall within a modest range of $10 to $20. However, this is all speculation as the actual price has not been revealed.
