Online, a seemingly leaked image of the potential dock for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 has surfaced. This picture, shared by Laura Kate Dale – an industry consultant in gaming – doesn’t offer many specifics, but it does suggest the power requirements and shows that the new dock has more curved edges compared to the original one.
The image suggests a notable difference in power requirements for the new Switch 2’s dock compared to the original Nintendo Switch. Specifically, it appears that the new dock may need higher voltages for its input, as shown by a potential increase from 15V at 2.6A to 20V at 3A. Meanwhile, the output voltage remains similar, but there might be a slight increase from 1.2A to 2.8A in the new dock’s output.
This implies that the potential Switch 2 could require more power due to its advanced hardware delivering superior graphical quality compared to the initial Nintendo Switch. Although we’re unsure about the exact extent of this visual enhancement, it’s reasonable to anticipate improved and energy-efficient hardware in the upcoming console for smooth gameplay with high-quality graphics at consistent frame rates, even when running on battery power for portable use.
Dale recently shared a new photo from a reliable source on platform X, displaying what appears to be a Switch 2 Dock. The image shows visible voltage information for both input and output, while other details are hidden. Notably, it’s been reported that the Switch 2 comes packaged with a 60W charger designed for use with this dock.
In simpler terms, this implies that the USB-C charger for the Nintendo Switch, which can also fit into its dock, might not work with the Nintendo Switch 2 because it’s designed to handle lower voltages. Dale expresses a similar thought in his subsequent post.
According to Dale’s post, it seems that the main charger cable currently used with the Switch may not work for charging the Switch 2 when it is docked.
This image allegedly showing the Switch 2 dock is the most recent in a string of leaks about the console that have surfaced lately. Just this week, images suggesting one of the JoyCons for Nintendo’s forthcoming console were posted online. These pictures seem to imply that the Switch 2 will offer local multiplayer functionality similar to its predecessor through its controllers.
This month, a patent application surfaced suggesting that the Switch 2 could incorporate techniques similar to Nvidia’s DLSS for enhancing image quality. Although specifics about how this image enhancement would be implemented haven’t been disclosed yet, it was mentioned that the console will have the capability to display lower-resolution graphics at resolutions up to 4K using AI-powered upscaling technology.
It’s worth noting that Nintendo hasn’t publicly confirmed a successor to the Nintendo Switch yet. Nonetheless, they’ve hinted at revealing their new console prior to April, suggesting a release wouldn’t be too far off. If this timeline holds true, it’s possible that the Switch 2 has been in production for a while already, which could explain the leaked images we’ve seen recently.
From what I gather, it seems unlikely that the main charger cable for the current-generation Switch will work for charging the Switch 2 when docked.
