Approximately six years ago, Nintendo drew attention when they decided to abandon work on Metroid Prime 4, instead opting to restart development under Retro Studios‘ leadership. Although the Austin-based team was renowned for the first three games in the series, it had been relatively quiet since launching Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze in 2014. This period of silence left a gap of five years on their portfolio, sparking curiosity among fans about what the developer was busy with during that time. At long last, it appears we have an answer, and it seems they were working on a new intellectual property.
On the online forum ResetEra, video content creator Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly shared that an upcoming game from Retro Studios would have been a unique role-playing game (RPG) centered around music, where the main feature was singing. Simultaneously, Bandai Namco was taking charge of Metroid Prime 4. Unfortunately, the music RPG turned out to be a catastrophic failure, leading Nintendo to cancel the project and task Retro with remastering the original Metroid Prime games instead. Following some resolution of tensions with Metroid Prime producer Kensuke Tanabe, Nintendo terminated Bandai Namco’s work on Metroid Prime 4, and the project was then revived under the care of Retro Studios.
According to Reilly’s statement, when Bandai Namco’s project on Prime 4 didn’t work out, the task was handed back to Retro Studios. After resolving their disagreement with Tanabe, they managed to complete a remastered version of the original Prime, as all resources had been diverted to focus on Prime 4 instead.
As a dedicated fan, I’d always suggest approaching such leaks with a hint of skepticism. However, when it comes to Retro Studios, Reilly is a name synonymous with credibility. Over the past few years, the Kiwi Talkz YouTube channel has conducted numerous interviews with former Retro Studios developers, shedding new light and revealing fascinating insights. Given that this could well be as close as we’ll get to an official statement on the matter, fellow fans might feel reassured in believing that this indeed represents the project Retro Studios was working on.
Reilly further commented that he’s uncertain about the current situation regarding remakes of Metroid Prime 2 and Metroid Prime 3. Since the launch of the first one, there have been numerous speculations about possible remakes for these two titles. However, instead of working on remakes, Retro Studios has been focusing on developing the next installment in the series. It’s plausible that Nintendo might assign the remake tasks to another studio; this isn’t an unusual move for Nintendo as they have outsourced similar projects from Retro Studios before.
Despite the music-themed RPG not making its mark, fans can look forward to the launch of “Metroid Prime 4: Beyond” in 2025, a long-awaited title from Retro Studios. This is the studio’s next project and the subsequent installment in the Prime series, which has been absent for over a decade. Here’s hoping the wait will be worth it!
