Nintendo Switch Online Adds First Free N64 Game of 2025 (And It’s a Great One)

Starting from 2025, subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online can now access the inaugural free N64 game. This particular title was initially released in the year 2000 and is available on Switch, Switch Lite, and OLED Switch. In 2000, N64 enthusiasts enjoyed a wealth of games such as Perfect Dark, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Mario Tennis, Banjo-Tooie, Pokemon Puzzle League, Paper Mario, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Excitebike 64, WWF No Mercy, and Madden NFL 2001. These games represented the cream of the crop for N64 gamers that year, but there were also other underrated titles that garnered a dedicated fanbase.

Among these options, it’s clear that one contender is Ridge Racer 64, a game developed by none other than Nintendo itself. In order to launch it, Namco granted the intellectual property rights to Nintendo. This unique move made Ridge Racer 64 the first installment in the series not released on Arcades or PlayStation consoles.

Sadly, this particular addition is exclusive to the Expansion Pack tier of Nintendo Switch Online (the pricier option). Users with a standard Nintendo Switch Online subscription won’t be able to access or play it like they can games from other legacy systems such as the NES and SNES. However, if you have the Expansion Pack version of NSO, you can explore the game via the Nintendo Switch Online app. For more details about this 2000 classic game, check out the information provided below.

Jump straight into the excitement with Ridge Racer 64, as per Nintendo’s description. It delivers the high-speed arcade gameplay you’re familiar with from Ridge Racer, but takes it to new heights with unique features! Battle against up to four opponents on a single screen at the same time. Experience unprecedented tracks and be amazed by stunning visual effects. This version of Ridge Racer is unlike any other you’ve seen!

With Nintendo Switch Online, Ridge Racer 64 isn’t freely accessible; instead, you need an active membership to play it. If your subscription expires, remember that you’ll need to reactivate it before diving into Ridge Racer 64 or any other game offered through Nintendo Switch Online. In essence, this isn’t a free download, but rather a rental service with ongoing requirements.
