Nintendo Switch Online Adds Freebies Based on One of the Best SNES Games Ever

As a seasoned gamer who’s grown up with the retro charm of Nintendo consoles, I can confidently say that the latest addition of Donkey Kong Country profile icons to Nintendo Switch Online is a delightful treat! It’s like stepping back into my childhood, where the jungles of DK Island echo with memories of platforming perfection.

Over the past few months, the Nintendo Switch Online service has been providing free profile icons inspired by games from its older systems, such as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. This week, they’ve added more icons featuring characters from the original “Donkey Kong Country”. Similar to the recent icons based on the “Donkey Kong” NES game, you can only unlock these icons if you play the game through Nintendo Switch Online. If you haven’t had a chance to experience this classic game developed by Rare, now might be the ideal opportunity! The original “DKC” is widely regarded as one of the best games ever on the SNES platform.

Images of some of the Donkey Kong Country profile icons can be found below.

After unlocking these character profiles, you can acquire each of them using 10 Platinum points. Since you earn 50 points simply by playing the game, you can obtain all but two profiles. The collection features Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Cranky Kong, Funky Kong, King K. Rool, Rambi the Rhino, and Winky the Frog. While this selection is decent, it lacks Candy Kong and several Animal Buddies like Squawks, Expresso, and Enguarde. To make matters worse, no backgrounds are included, which seems unfair. Sadly, only one set of icons is being provided, and they can be claimed until September 2nd, 17:59 p.m. PT.

Originally launched on SNES back in 1994, “Donkey Kong Country” departed from its arcade origins to create a fresh environment for Donkey Kong to roam around in. This new world introduced new allies and adversaries for the titular character. The game was an enormous hit, leaving an enduring impact that spanned for years; iconic characters such as Cranky and Diddy eventually made their way into “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” while a section inspired by “Donkey Kong Country” within Super Nintendo World is under development at Universal Parks as we speak.

The popularity of “Donkey Kong Country” led to two follow-up games being launched on SNES, and today, you can play all three titles on Nintendo Switch Online. Some enthusiasts believe that “Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest” is the best game in the series. It remains exciting to speculate whether this game will receive a collection of profile icons from Nintendo Switch Online as well. For now, fans can only enjoy those based on the original game!
