Nintendo Switch Online Makes Four SNES Games Free for All Subscribers

As a veteran gamer who grew up with the Super Nintendo, I must say I’m thrilled about the latest additions to the Nintendo Switch Online library! Although I might not be familiar with some of these Japanese titles, it’s always exciting to explore new games from my favorite system.

As a Nintendo Switch Online subscriber, I can’t help but appreciate the opportunity to dive into a treasure trove of classic games from Nintendo’s early days. The Super Nintendo app on my Switch has been steadily expanding, and I’m thrilled to see four more titles added recently. Interestingly, only one of these games is originally from the SNES, while the other three were designed for the Japanese Super Famicom. This might mean that some games may be new discoveries for those who grew up playing SNES, but us old-school gamers could find a fresh favorite in this bunch! Here are the latest additions:

  • BattleToads Double Dragon
  • Big Run
  • Cosmo Gang The Puzzle
  • Kunio-kun no Dodgeball da yo Zen’in Shugo

As a gaming enthusiast, when Nintendo transfers Super Famicom games to my console, I appreciate that they keep the original versions intact without any translations. However, for those of us who can’t read Japanese, it can be somewhat annoying as we’re essentially left to guess our way through the menus. Luckily, games like “Big Run” and “Cosmo Gang The Puzzle” already had a good amount of English text, making them straightforward to pick up and play. Racing games and puzzle games are usually simple to adapt without translations, as their gameplay is universally understood. It’s also comforting that the menus are relatively easy to navigate. However, it’s worth noting that the Kunio-kun Dodgeball game can be a bit tricky to maneuver through.

Since Nintendo Switch Online was introduced, companies like Capcom, Konami, and Square Enix have not been very active in providing support. This could be because these companies prefer to sell their classic games as compilations on the eShop or in stores instead. Remarkably, Microsoft has emerged as one of the major supporters of Nintendo Switch Online. They’ve been collaborating with Nintendo to bring a significant portion of Rare’s back catalog to the platform, including various BattleToads games. BattleToads in Battlemaniacs was added earlier this year, and now subscribers can also enjoy BattleToads Double Dragon. Interestingly, the original BattleToads is still not available on the NES app, but it’s hoped that Microsoft will make it accessible at some point!
