Nintendo Switch Online New Free Game Is a Game Boy Classic From 1995

As a gamer who’s been around since the dawn of portable gaming, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when I hear about the return of Donkey Kong Land on Nintendo Switch Online. Back in 1995, I was just starting to dip my toes into the world of video games, and Donkey Kong Land was one of the first games that truly captivated me.

The Nintendo Switch Online application has received a fresh update on Switch, Switch Lite, and OLED Switch systems, offering a classic Game Boy game from 1995 for free. This year marks nearly three decades since 1995, when games like Chrono Trigger, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest, Tekken 2, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, Dragon Quest VI, Mega Man 7, Twisted Metal, Star Wars: Dark Forces, Rayman, Mortal Kombat 3, Ristar, Sega Rally Championship, and Panzer Dragoon were released. While not the most impressive year for games in the ’90s, there were certainly some notable titles among them.

1995 wasn’t exactly a banner year for the Nintendo Game Boy as it didn’t receive much attention, while the SNES was Nintendo’s popular console. However, there were some remarkable Game Boy games worth checking out despite this. For instance, Donkey Kong Land – a game that shrank down the gameplay of 1994’s Donkey Kong Country for the SNES, making it playable on the Game Boy.

The re-issued edition managed to sell several million copies and received favorable criticisms, making it one of Nintendo’s significant achievements in that year. This was subsequently followed by Donkey Kong Land 2 in 1996, followed by Donkey Kong Land II in the same year. In 1997, they released Donkey Kong Land III. Then, in 2000, a Game Boy Color adaptation of the initial Donkey Kong Country game was launched, aiming to provide a more accurate re-creation of the previously mentioned Donkey Kong Country.

Since that time, the series hasn’t seen any new releases, but the games have been made available again on the Nintendo 3DS through the Virtual Console in 2014. Fast-forward a decade and it seems like the games could be making their way to the Nintendo Switch via Nintendo Switch Online, as the first game has just been added to this service starting today.

1995’s timeless game makes a comeback, featuring 30 fresh levels and save data that persists even without batteries, along with several additional features. For those who are not acquainted with it, you can find further information about it below, as provided by an official game description from Nintendo.
