Nintendo Switch Online Reveals New Zelda Freebies

Nintendo Switch Online users are now eligible for free items inspired by a duo of timeless Zelda series games. This round, Nintendo is distributing artwork derived from “Zelda II: The Adventure of Link” (NES) and “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” (N64). Keep in mind that when Nintendo introduces icons based on older titles, there’s usually a condition: users must access these games via the corresponding Nintendo Classic app before they can obtain the icons. But once the software is started from the app, the icons can be claimed instantly without needing to play the software itself.

In the game titled “The Adventure of Link“, Nintendo has incorporated five badges, each worth 10 Platinum points apiece. These badges are modeled after the pixel designs from the original NES game, except for those representing “Ocarina of Time“, which are inspired by art within the game itself. For the N64 version of the game, Nintendo provided a larger number of badges, totaling 13. The designs feature various representations of Link in both his youthful and adult forms, as well as characters such as Sheik, Ganondorf, Navi, and others. Upon launching either game, subscribers will receive 50 Platinum points, amounting to a combined total of 100 points for both games.

Opinions about Zelda II: The Adventure of Link aren’t all positive; its challenging nature has given it a less-than-stellar reputation among many fans of the series. However, Ocarina of Time, released for N64 in 1998, is often hailed as one of the greatest video games ever made. If you’ve yet to experience this classic, the recent free offerings on Nintendo Switch Online presents a fantastic opportunity to dive into a piece of gaming history that’s still relevant today. This game not only set new standards for the Zelda series, but also significantly influenced the direction of gaming as a whole.

Alongside their profile icons, Nintendo Switch Online members now have access to a collection of music inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom within the Nintendo Music application. Impressively, Nintendo has included an impressive total of 344 tracks for the game, equating to approximately 12 hours of enchanting melodies! While not all Zelda soundtracks are available at this time, expect the selection to grow steadily as more are added over time.

As we approach the Nintendo Switch 2 generation this week, there’s uncertainty about where the Zelda series is headed next. Some Zelda games on the Switch, like Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Link’s Awakening, and Echoes of Wisdom, are scheduled for updates on the new platform. However, Nintendo has not yet confirmed a brand-new Zelda game, apart from the Hyrule Warriors spin-off. Here’s hoping we hear about a fresh installment soon, but in the meantime, fans can enjoy the existing games within the series.
