To prevent users from recording exclusive trailers and videos within its news app, Nintendo Today, Nintendo appears to have set up a block. This was observed by Reddit user Cube_play_8, who discovered that trying to take a screenshot or record a video from the app results in a blank screen. This is demonstrated in a brief clip shared on a Reddit thread, where the user was attempting to capture a screenshot of a Mario Kart World trailer.
Cube_play_8 points out that the type of DRM employed by Nintendo for their app seems exclusive to newer smartphones, as reported by users. It appears that a Xiaomi 15 Ultra doesn’t support capturing or recording content, whereas an older model like the Poco F5 Pro does seem capable of recording. A short video posted by the user demonstrates both phones in action.
One comment in the Reddit discussion mentions that user Oatmeal Dome from BlueSky has previously developed a method to obtain videos and snapshots directly from Nintendo’s servers, bypassing the need for the Nintendo Today app. These obtained media are subsequently shared on the TodayNews BlueSky account.
We attempted to capture videos from the Nintendo Today app using screen recording on a Google Pixel 8 device (running the latest version of both the app and Android). However, we failed to record any gameplay footage from the trailers. While the sound and ESRB rating were successfully captured, the actual gameplay video was displayed as completely black.
Nintendo has been leveraging its smartphone app to disclose additional information regarding the upcoming Switch 2 and games scheduled for it. The app also serves to demonstrate new products that Nintendo plans to offer, such as Amiibo figures and accessories. For example, details about the Switch 2’s GameChat feature with text-to-speech and live captioning were shared via clips from the Nintendo Today app.
The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is set to arrive in stores starting June 5, accompanied by several launch games. This next-gen console will also debut its own voice and video chat feature called GameChat, which can be accessed by pressing the new C button on the Joy-Con 2 controllers. Notably, Nintendo has disclosed that using GameChat requires Switch 2 users to confirm their account information through a phone number.
As the release date for the console approaches, it seems there may not be many reviews from media outlets due to Nintendo’s decision to withhold review units until closer to launch. A recent report suggests that these units will only be sent out near the console’s debut. This timing presents challenges for some publications, as they also have Summer Game Fest to cover around the same time. For more information, check out our coverage.
