In terms of console releases, Nintendo usually introduces a significant unique selling point with its hardware. Examples include the motion controls on the Wii, the dual-screen aspect of the DS and 3DS, or the controller screen of the Wii U. The Nintendo Switch was also groundbreaking at launch for its ability to function both as a portable handheld device and a home console when connected.
During a recent Q&A session, Nintendo’s Takuhiro Dohta disclosed that the upcoming console, tentatively named Switch 2, will not feature any significant novelty or unique selling point like its predecessors. Instead, the company has aimed to create a robust gaming device with many of the same attributes as the initial Switch. Dohta clarified this decision was based on the evolution of game development since the launch of the original Switch.
Speaking from a software developer’s point of view, Dohta expressed thoughts on designing an ideal console for game development. Previously, Nintendo’s software had leveraged distinctive hardware capabilities like the Wii Remote and the dual screens of the Nintendo DS. However, since the launch of Switch, there seems to be a change in the way developers create games, according to him.
Instead of relying on unique hardware capabilities, developers now have the freedom to select specific software technologies that will distinguish their video games.
Additionally, he mentioned that it’s less beneficial to add new hardware features that might not be utilized by programmers. Instead, the company is prioritizing improvements on the original Nintendo Switch’s weaknesses, particularly its lower total power.
As a software developer, I believe that merely adding new hardware features doesn’t automatically solve problems or generate endless new gaming experiences. Consequently, when discussing Switch 2, we aimed to boost its processing speed to establish it as a robust platform for game development, enabling software creators to produce the games they envision.
Tetsuya Sasaki from Nintendo’s Technology Development Division clarified that just because they may not release new hardware in the future, it doesn’t rule out the possibility of offering distinctive gaming experiences. Instead, Nintendo is interested in experimenting with unique gameplay mechanics by adding additional hardware to specific games. He cited Ring Fit Adventure as an illustration of this approach.
Sasaki clarified that while Nintendo may not be introducing a console with entirely novel hardware features right now, it doesn’t mean they won’t do so in the future. For this particular console, they opted to focus on enhancing gameplay experiences by offering additional accessories along with certain games, similar to how they bundled the Ring-Con with Ring Fit Adventure.
