Previously, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Search, an innovative search tool aimed at matching the performance of Bing and Google. Essentially, ChatGPT Search is a refined version of GPT-4o, further trained using advanced synthetic data generation methods, such as distilling results from OpenAI o1-preview.

Initially, the ability to use this tool was hidden under a $20 subscription to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus or Team package. But since then, OpenAI has made an announcement that ChatGPT search will now be available for free, no longer requiring the $20 subscription plans.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that users can enjoy the AI-enhanced search service without needing to register or log in. In fact, this feature has been accessible to everyone since December, yet there was one essential condition: users had to sign up or log in before they could utilize it.

According to Tom’s Guide, our sister site has pointed out that OpenAI is subtly encouraging users to sign up or log in to enhance their search experience. The analysis suggests that repeatedly asking the chatbot the same question in an attempt to get a different response might be classified as “questionable behavior,” causing the tool to ask the user to log in instead.

For a more straightforward ChatGPT search experience, there’s an available Chrome extension that alters your browser’s primary search engine to match ChatGPT. Users of Microsoft Edge can also benefit from this feature, but be aware that the browser may initially flag it for security reasons, requiring manual activation.
