No Good Deed ending explained: What happened in Lydia and Paul’s home?

As a seasoned crime analyst with years of experience under my belt, I’ve seen enough twists and turns to fill a small library. But even for someone like me, the events unfolding in this series have been nothing short of captivating.

*Warning: This article contains full spoilers for the final episode of No Good Deed.*

Initially appearing as a light-hearted series about the extreme measures some couples take to secure their ideal property, the show soon reveals it has deeper layers. As we delve into the stories of the three competing couples for Lydia and Paul’s home, we come to understand that there are hidden truths within many of them, as they conceal secrets of their own.

However, a significant portion of the storyline delves into the enigmatic events leading up to Lydia and their son, Jacob’s, murder, hinted at through various flashback scenes.

In the second-to-last episode, emotions peak as Paul challenges his spouse about the change in her since Jacob’s passing, prompting an emotional response. This conversation is disrupted by Emily (played by Chloe East), their daughter, who discovers a box containing items from the night Jacob was killed.

It turns out that Emily accidentally shot her brother Jacob, thinking he was a burglar as he attempted to enter their house. However, when Paul finds an additional bullet from that night, doubts arise about whether someone else might have also fired a weapon.

Add to that the fact that Leslie (Abbi Jacobson) reads through Jacob’s autopsy report and finds out that the gun that killed him has been photographed in a picture of JD (Luke Wilson) and you have quite the set up for the final episode, right?

No Good Deed ending explained

In the finale, we get a good overview of all the couples and what unfolds for each of them.

Upon discovering a possibility of an alternate motive behind their son’s death and suspecting that their daughter might not have been involved in the crime after all, Lydia becomes resolute about uncovering the truth regarding that fateful evening.

Meanwhile, Carla (played by Teyonnah Paris) has welcomed a new life into the world. However, Dennis (portrayed by O-T Fagbenle) finds himself grappling with a revelation – his father isn’t biologically his. As he confronts his mother Denise (Anna Maria Horsford), he discovers that his biological father has passed away. Despite this knowledge, Dennis remains frustrated and upset about the deception.

Later on, it’s revealed that Margo (Linda Cardellini) secretly brought Harper to a luxurious hotel room without informing JD. When he tried to call and locate her, their conversation became subtly confrontational, escalating JD’s frustration to its peak.

In the labor ward, Carla and Dennis have a disagreement over how Dennis is handling his mother’s care. However, it’s also revealed that Carla may not have been completely truthful about her father’s status. Namely, she hasn’t disclosed that he’s a billionaire. The reason for this silence is that her father had an affair with her mother, but she needed his wealth to avoid using Denise’s money and prevent Denise from moving in.

Following her stay at the hotel, Margo heads home, stopping by Lydia’s house to drop off Harper on the way. Upon encountering JD, she learns that he no longer has funds for her and plans to keep the house under his name. As a response, Margo resorts to striking herself, hoping it might suggest assault if things escalate, thereby implicating JD. Just when things seem dire, Margo’s brother Bobby shows up, prepared to support Margo in any allegations she makes against JD.

After welcoming their newborn child at home, Carla and Dennis were taken aback by discovering a gift from Carla’s father. Upon further examination, Dennis uncovered a check for five million dollars, deciding to keep the information hidden from Carla.

Towards the end of the episode, we catch a glimpse into the future where Dennis is shown to deposit the check, disguising it as an advance payment for his third book, instead of revealing the truth to Carla.

However, matters become intricate as Carla’s father acknowledges his actions and questions whether Dennis will truly disregard him following the transfer of his funds.

Who killed Jacob?

In a turn of events, Lydia discovers that Leslie has retrieved Jacob’s autopsy report earlier and decides to confront her at home. Leslie expresses regret but informs Lydia about the weapon used to kill Jacob being a .40 caliber gun. However, when Lydia reveals their personal firearm, a 9mm, it becomes clear that the weapon responsible for Jacob’s death is not theirs.

After returning home, Lydia shares the details from the autopsy report with Emily. She clarifies that she wasn’t responsible for Jacob’s death because an additional bullet casing was discovered at the scene.

That night, Lydia shares with Emily and Paul some suspicions Phyllis has been expressing concerning them. Among these suspicions is the possibility of an affair between Paul and Margo.

Despite Margo informing Emily that JD wasn’t taking his medication, unexpectedly, JD shows up at their house, prepared to retrieve Harper. When Paul and Lydia wished to converse with JD, Emily sends Harper off to play with Jacob’s old keyboard, but Harper confesses she doesn’t know how to perform music. Lydia is perplexed as Jacob had given Harper piano lessons for a whole year, but Harper clarifies that she only ever received one lesson; the remaining time was simply Jacob dropping by to socialize with Margo.

In a hidden chamber, Paul challenges JD regarding his alleged involvement in Jacob’s death, while simultaneously, Lydia heads towards JD and Margo’s residence to probe Margo about any connection she may have with her adolescent son.

Margo shares that Jacob had feelings for her and used to gift her presents. However, she adds that Jacob, who was the local thief, admitted to stealing from them – a fact that only someone present on the specific night could have discovered.

In a swift move, Margo attempts to grab the gun from her bag with the intention of firing at Lydia, but Lydia manages to intervene at the last moment. Despite their suspicions, neither Lydia nor Paul are positive that Margo is responsible for Jacob’s death, as she persists in claiming innocence.

Following her encounter with Lydia, Margo can be found unwinding in a bubble bath, her mind continuing to ponder over Lydia’s suggestion that she has a “tainted spirit”.

As she soaks in the bathtub, her mind drifts to the fateful night when Jacob met his end. The scene shifts to a flashback, showing us that Jacob had found himself in Margo and JD’s residence, attempting to pilfer some jewelry. When Margo entered to halt him, he defended his actions by claiming it was merely “reclaiming what I gave you.” However, Margo refused and threatened to expose him as the neighborhood thief if he didn’t return the stolen goods.

In response, Jacob threatens to reveal their relationship to JD. Although Margo insists nothing happened between them, Jacob counters by reminding her of their intimate encounter the previous week, which seemed to suggest otherwise.

Jacob sprints from his residence, wearing a balaclava, with Margo in hot pursuit, as she desperately urges him to halt. She’s terrified that if Jacob reveals the true nature of their relationship, she could stand to lose everything.

Upon Jacob attempting entry to his house, Margo delivers a last stern caution before firing a shot at the exact spot where Emily had previously discharged her weapon. Recognizing that she could implicate Emily in the act, Margo swiftly departs, leaving behind the crime scene.

What happened to Margo?

In a tranquil setting bathed in candlelight, Margo was enjoying a solitary soak, however, her peaceful moment was interrupted as an alarm’s sound jolted her awake following a flashback of Jacob’s tragic demise.

She suddenly understands that what’s happening is a fire alarm, and her bathroom is rapidly filling with smoke. As the camera pulls back to reveal the house, it becomes clear that Margo and JD’s mansion is ablaze, the fires appearing to have been ignited from within.

In a different phrasing, you might say: We overhear Margo’s cries for assistance, but the scene shifts to footage of JD speeding in his car, showing a grave expression. Could it be JD who set the fire? Or possibly, Lydia? She did hint to Paul and Mikey that she had “taken care” of things when Paul discussed clearing out their Los Feliz home and suspecting Margo killed her child. Could Lydia have sought revenge in this way?

Six months into the future, it’s revealed that Margo not only survived but also enjoyed another day. Sitting at a bar, she’s seen sipping a cocktail when a stranger walks up to her. Despite having severe burns on one side of her face, she maintains her flirtatious nature, engaging with the stranger. To our surprise, this stranger turns out to be none other than Nate, a police officer and Mikey’s son (played by Kevin Alves). He then confronts Margo, revealing her true identity as Luann.

Regarding JD, it appears he’s landed a fresh position as a cowboy within Teton Territory, marking his return to acting.

Who bought the Los Feliz house?

Six months post the fire, there’s a glimpse into the future showing that Leslie and Sarah are thriving in their Los Feliz residence.

They’re currently adorning a nursery for their newborn son, chuckling over the guidelines Lydia provided for the mandarin tree. (9 words)

What happened to Lydia and Paul?

Although it’s uncertain where they ultimately went, we are fortunate to witness a touching farewell scene between Lydia, Paul, and Emily. In this scene, Emily and Lydia share the stage to perform a song that Emily wrote, with music arranged by Jacob, and played beautifully on the piano by Lydia.

During the performance, the lamp on Paul’s table began to fluctuate – a sign that Lydia had once suggested as evidence that Jacob was trying to communicate with them. Moved by this, Paul greeted with a “hello” and a smile, as he listened to his daughter and wife carry on with their act.
