In the Weapon X program, Logan’s skeleton and claws were fortified with almost unyielding adamantium, transforming him into an indomitable assassin known as Wolverine. However, something — or perhaps something otherworldly — has been attempting to shatter this metal-fanged mutant in the ongoing Wolverine comic series by Saladin Ahmed and Martin Coccolo. As the Krakoan Age of the X-Men concluded, Wolverine found himself residing with wolves in the harsh Canadian wilderness. Yet, his old foe, Cyber, murdered his wolf pack in an attempt to settle a longstanding grudge. However, a primal power then discovered the artificial metal within his bones: adamantium.
Lately in the Wolverine comics, an unidentified power took control over Cyber’s adamantium arms, Lady Deathstrike’s adamantium claws, and Constrictor’s adamantium-infused wraps. By removing and refining the “fake metal” from Wolverine’s adversaries, it has been growing in strength, and soon it will be powerful enough to remove all adamantium from Earth.
In her possession, Lady Deathstrike informed Wolverine that he was being overwhelmed by the shrill sound of the fake metal inside him, which he hadn’t yet sensed. She then unveiled an ancient force, one that Wolverine could sense deep within his very bones.
In the fifth issue of “Wolverine” published on Wednesday, the infectious gold Adamantine, similar to a virus that spread from Cyber to Lady Deathstrike and Constrictor, was about to take control of Wolverine. He sensed the primal call emanating from the metal embedded in his bones growing fainter with distance. The X-Man Nightcrawler arrived in the “Blackbird” to assist Wolverine, but Cyber tricked him into following a trail that led to a factory where Wolverine detected an odor he was familiar with: it was one of the chemical substances used to manufacture adamantium.
As a devoted cinephile, I found myself face-to-face with Cyber, who carried an ominous message written in blood: “No More Adamantium“. This chilling statement echoed the words of Lady Deathstrike, resonating within me as if she were speaking directly to me.
As a movie buff immersed in my cinematic world, I’m struck deafeningly by the piercing scream of the fake metal resonating within me. Yet, the enchanting melody of the Adamantine remains unheard to me as of now.
When Wolverine senses the cry from the ancient metal echoing within his adamantium frame, a primal voice whispers that he’s harder to subdue compared to other noisy users of the original metal. He is more robust, untainted, and has a role in cleansing Earth of adamantium. However, before he can fulfill this purpose, he needs to be refined.
The False Metal: Adamantium vs. Adamantine
In the Marvel universe, Adamantium, a material associated with Wolverine, shares its name with adamantine, a mythical substance from Greek tales. This legendary metal is famously known as “the Metal of the Gods,” and it’s the key component in Hercules’ Golden Mace, which can endure powerful strikes even from Thor’s enchanted hammer, Mjolnir.
2011 saw the introduction in issue #45 of “Astonishing X-Men” of a unique Wolverine character, Captain James Howlett, hailing from another dimension. This version of Wolverine was an X-Man, boasting an adamantium-reinforced claws and skeleton that rendered him resistant to psychic attacks and nearly indestructible.
1st issue of December’s Timeslide unveiled that The False Metal is one of the most impactful tales set to unfold across the Marvel Universe in 2025. Moreover, Marvel hinted at a surprising comeback and crucial appearance in March’s Wolverine #7 (issue #399), which serves as a prelude to the notable Wolverine #400 in April.
Wolverine: No More Adamantium?
In the “Fatal Attractions” arc of 1993’s X-Men #25 comic, Magneto, the mutant with control over magnetism, came close to killing Wolverine by disintegrating his adamantium skeleton on a molecular level. This intense attack pushed Wolverine’s healing ability to its maximum. Miraculously, Wolverine lived and his bone claws regenerated, as depicted in 1993’s Wolverine #75. With his healing factor diminished and his adamantium skeleton gone, Wolverine chose to part ways with the X-Men in the same issue.
Not long after, Wolverine fought Lady Deathstrike (in issues #77-78 of Wolverine) and then Cyber (issue #79). Following the villain Genesis’s attempt to fuse adamantium with his bones, making him a Horseman of Apocalypse named Death, Wolverine was left in a wild, beast-like condition (as depicted in issue #100 of Wolverine).
In a rawer, more instinctive phase, Wolverine remained that way until the 145th issue of Wolverine comic series in 1999. It was then that Apocalypse took Sabretooth’s adamantium and re-bonded it to Wolverine, stating, “You may be skilled, but Wolverine… he is the best there is at what he does.
