No More Dragon Ball Super Coming This Year According to New Hiatus Update

As a dedicated fan of Dragon Ball for decades now, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions as I read about the current status of Dragon Ball Super. The news of Akira Toriyama’s passing was a heavy blow to the community, and the indefinite hiatus of Dragon Ball Super has only added to the sense of uncertainty.

The manga version of “Dragon Ball Super” has been on an extended break since the passing of its creator Akira Toriyama, with recent news suggesting this hiatus will continue for the remainder of the year at least. Meanwhile, “Dragon Ball” is at a turning point following Toriyama’s death, as a new anime series titled “Dragon Ball Daima” featuring fresh stories and characters from the creator himself is set to debut. This will be the last project with Toriyama’s direct involvement, leaving uncertain the fate of the ongoing “Dragon Ball Super” manga.

The creators of Dragon Ball anime have expressed their intention to produce more installments post-Dragon Ball Daima, but things have been different for Dragon Ball Super. Unlike before its spring hiatus, Dragon Ball Super was receiving direct guidance from Akira Toriyama on how it could extend the storyline beyond the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero arc. Sadly, there’s no sign of its return in the near future as mentioned by @DbsHype on X, and even the next issue of Shueisha’s V-Jump magazine doesn’t indicate a new chapter or potential release date in December 2024.

Dragon Ball Super Is Still On Indefinite Hiatus

After Toriyama’s passing this Spring, Shueisha announced that “Dragon Ball Super” would be taking an open-ended break starting from Chapter 103 released on March 20th, following the conclusion of the “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” arc’s epilogue. This alignment with the final anime release for the franchise at the time leaves room for speculation about future developments like the introduction of the universe’s strongest new fighter, Black Frieza, which fans eagerly anticipate.

Of course, fans are eagerly waiting to find out if “Dragon Ball Super” will produce more episodes, but it’s a tricky situation indeed. The artist responsible for the series, Toyotaro, has hinted at his wish to carry on with the manga in the future, yet translating that into reality is not as straightforward as it sounds. The anime is an entity of its own and is currently exploring new narratives, but Toyotaro would face a challenging task in continuing the official timeline for Toriyama’s story without the creator’s direct involvement. It’s a rocky road ahead.

Will Dragon Ball Super Ever Return?

It’s quite possible that we’ll see more chapters of “Dragon Ball Super” in the future, but it will require considerable time and dedication to make that happen. This is a distinctive scenario for everyone involved because now, “Dragon Ball” will be managed by Shueisha, meaning any new story ideas from this point onward won’t necessarily have Toriyama’s direct approval. While continuing the series without Toriyama might seem challenging, it’s been done before in cases like “Berserk,” demonstrating that it is indeed feasible.

If Toyotaro comes up with concepts for where “Dragon Ball Super” should go next and receives backing from Shueisha to bring those plans to life, then there’s a chance the manga could resurface in the future. To ensure its success and allow the story to unfold, fans will need to offer their continued support as well. In case “Dragon Ball Super” does come back with fresh instalments in the future, readers will have to show their backing for upcoming releases if they want the narrative to extend far enough to resolve the battle against Black Frieza at least.
