No stone unturned

As a seasoned movie buff with a keen interest in politics and history, I cannot help but recommend adding “A Storm Foretold” to your watchlist. This documentary provides an intriguing look into the life of Roger Stone, a man who was once a close ally and advisor to former President Donald Trump.

Add A Storm Foretold to your watchlist

Charlie Munger, a long-time American investor, is admired not only for his business acumen but also for his philosophical insights. Regarding the unpredictability of politics, he once remarked, “They are never so bad that you don’t live to miss them.” This statement seems particularly relevant now, as some people have come to view Donald Trump, who was once criticized as a buffoon, in a more positive light and refer to him as elder statesman. With Munger’s theory about Trump set to be put to the test, BBC4 is airing “A Storm Foretold” (Tuesday 10pm) – a documentary about Roger Stone, a former Presidential advisor and ally of Trump, who was also a one-time casino trade lobbyist. This documentary offers valuable insights into how Trump rose to power in 2016 and the events leading up to the storming of the Capitol in 2021.

In just 90 minutes, many events unfold, yet as Stone shares, “Saving Western civilization is no easy feat.” After Trump’s election, Stone was found guilty of seven felonies and received a sentence of 40 months in prison. However, he was later pardoned by the man in power, who, according to Stone, is deeply fond of the movie “Sunset Boulevard“. Isn’t it intriguing?

If there’s anyone who equals Trump’s unwavering confidence during turbulent times, it’s Stone. And remarkably, one of them is willing to have their hair-dyeing process filmed – with all that spray involved!

Christoffer Guldbransen, a Danish filmmaker, manages to document the entire story. Initially, he is drawn to Stone but later appears to lose her as a subject due to another film crew offering more money. When Guldbrandsen inquires about this from Stone’s assistant, the answer is simple: money. However, an unexpected turn of events occurs when Guldbrandsen suffers a heart attack, and Stone exhibits understanding behavior by re-inviting him back to the project.

As someone who has closely followed the events leading up to and after the 2021 presidential election, I find the story of Roger Stone particularly intriguing. Here’s my take on it, based on what I’ve learned:

No stone unturned

Thatcher and Reagan: a Very Special Relationship” (available on iPlayer), which is a two-part documentary about Thatcher and Reagan’s alliance during the 1980s, could be:

Cynthia “Crawfie” Crawford, Her assistant, recalls a 1978 encounter between Reagan and Thatcher. After this meeting, Thatcher shared with Crawford her impression of Reagan’s gentle speaking voice. On the other hand, Reagan’s advisor muses that he was strongly attracted to powerful women, and in Thatcher, he found one such woman. The depth of their relationship is revealed as a significant factor leading to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Their clashes over trade embargoes and the Falklands Conflict also add intrigue to their relationship.

As a seasoned documentary filmmaker with years of experience under my belt, I have had the privilege of capturing the raw and unfiltered truth through my lens. In my opinion, both “A Special Relationship” and “A Storm Foretold” are masterpieces in their unique ways.

A valid observation, yet lacking the necessary background information, perspective gained over time, or the wisdom of hindsight. What remains is an essential record for future historians when chronicling this remarkable period in history.
