As a seasoned tech analyst with over two decades of experience, I must admit that the concept design for Windows 12 presented by Nepnus is quite intriguing and refreshing. Having witnessed the evolution of Windows operating systems through various iterations, I can’t help but appreciate the subtle yet significant changes proposed in this vision.
Microsoft launched Windows 11 about three years ago, but expanding its user base has been challenging. Even though Windows 10 is set to end on October 14, 2025, growth remains elusive. To encourage users to upgrade, Microsoft has taken various tactics, such as displaying full-screen multipage advertisements and emphasizing the OS as a hub for celebrity news, stock market updates, and weather information.
Although Microsoft hasn’t publicly discussed a potential successor to Windows 11 (potentially Windows 12), various aspects of the upcoming next-gen operating system have been hinted at. Our Senior Editor, Zac Bowden, has compiled an extensive report detailing everything currently known about Windows 12.
More interestingly, a concept designer called Nepnus recently shared a short clip envisioning Windows 12’s design (via Beta News). Most of the elements shared in the clip are reminiscent of Windows 11 but with a new design language and refined user experience, including a centered taskbar featuring rounded corners.
Similar to how Microsoft emphasized AI in the development of Windows 11, a comparable focus is evident in the design of Nepnus, which we know as Nepnus AI. From the brief demonstration, it appears that Nepnus AI comes equipped with both image and text support, enhancing user interaction. It seems that Nepnus might be onto an innovative approach here.
In the month of November, mentions of “Windows Intelligence” emerged within Windows 11 development versions. This hints at the possibility that Microsoft might be considering a rebranding of its AI-focused features in Windows 11, such as Windows Recall, Live Captions, Windows Studio Effects, and so on, to a collective name of “Windows Intelligence.
In addition, the video shows a compact bar at the top for starting and searching, which floats. The centralized Start menu appears more useful and less cluttered. However, the video doesn’t specify if the app can be tailored to user preferences, but that would certainly add an interesting touch. Lastly, the design incorporates adjustable widgets and a redesigned Settings section for effortless customization and navigation.
The brief video showcases an effort to address significant concerns voiced by users about past Windows operating systems. Additionally, it’s clear that AI technology with a focus on generation will continue to play a key role in the future development of the Windows operating system.
