‘Nobody tells me what I can and can’t say’

As a seasoned moviegoer who’s seen more films than I can count on my toes and fingers combined, let me tell you that “Strictly Come Dancing” is not just another dance competition. It’s a spectacle, a rollercoaster ride of emotions, and a testament to human resilience and grace.

Has there been some discussion about the judges having disagreements this season? I’m curious, what’s the actual vibe among the four of you?

For nearly four decades, I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Anton, and for more than three, Motsi has been part of my life too. As for Craig, our friendship blossomed during the past eight years we’ve spent together on this show. Our camaraderie is so lively and enjoyable that it feels like we’ve known each other forever.

Do you have favourite celebrities from the start?

Initially, upon seeing someone descend the stairs, I occasionally find myself thinking, “That person doesn’t seem very coordinated.” However, I had similar thoughts about Bill Bailey, yet he ended up winning, so perhaps I shouldn’t jump to conclusions!

What have been your favourite moments on the show?

In week one, Kelvin Fletcher’s samba left me quite astonished, almost popping my eyes out of their sockets. Similarly, Giovanni and Rose Ayling-Ellis transported us into their personal realm as soon as they shut off the music.

Do your critiques vary depending on how robust a celebrity seems?

I have several hats. have a technician hat, an empathy hat and a snuggle-bunny cuddle hat if I feel they need it. I can read the room, put it that way. I might think I’m going to say one thing, then I see that they have struggled or made mistakes. You want to give encouragement for the parts they did well, but recognise the mistakes, too.

Do the producers ever tell you to go easy on somebody that’s having a hard week?

In simpler terms, there’s no one controlling or dictating what I can or cannot express. There are no communication devices, and nobody has given instructions about the things we should talk about.

Do you ever give the contestants advice backstage?

As I step down moments before the broadcast begins, there’s an exhilarating energy filling the air. The camaraderie among everyone is palpable. I simply offer words of encouragement as I pass by, “Give your best and savor each moment, for tomorrow these will be memories you cherish. Enjoy it all and don’t fret over mistakes.

As head judge, do you feel the pressure of having the final vote on who goes home?

On weekends, I often find myself hoping that others will take the lead on this task so it doesn’t fall on me. However, someone needs to do this work, and I always try to send them off with as much reassurance and warmth as possible. It’s hard for me to see them leave because I’ve grown fond of them and have watched them grow.

What would it take for you to leave the show?

In a nutshell, I’m eager to continue dancing on “Strictly” as long as I can tango. As a devoted dance enthusiast, I’ll gracefully make my way onto the show using my walking frame whenever necessary, for as long as this passion for dance lasts!
