As a seasoned film enthusiast who has traversed through the labyrinth of cinematic history, I must say that Robert Eggers‘ remake of Nosferatu is shaping up to be an intriguing addition to the gothic horror genre. Having immersed myself in the original 1922 silent film and Eggers’ previous works like The Witch and The Lighthouse, I am eagerly awaiting the extended cut of this new version.
The tease of a deleted scene, which adds an element of mystery to Bill Skarsgård’s Count Orlok, piques my interest even further. It’s always fascinating to delve deeper into the world of a filmmaker I admire, and Eggers seems to be providing ample opportunity for that with this extended cut.
As for the joke, well, it seems that the eternal struggle between film dorks and tension-ruining shots continues! But hey, who needs tension when you have a good story, right? Can’t wait to see what other secrets are hidden within the extended version of Nosferatu.
As a cinephile immersed in the world of chilling tales, I’m thrilled to share that the extended version of the timeless horror masterpiece, “Nosferatu,” is finally making its way onto Blu-ray and DVD. Clocking in at an enthralling 2 hours and 13 minutes, this gothic remake from director Robert Eggers, a follow-up to his 1922 silent film namesake, ranks as his second-longest work (slightly overshadowed by 2022’s “The Northman” at 2 hours and 17 minutes). Compared to his earlier creations like the 2015 classic, “The Witch,” which ran for just an hour and 32 minutes, or “The Lighthouse” in 2019 that lasted an hour and 49 minutes, this extended cut of “Nosferatu” promises a more immersive, spine-tingling experience.
In only six days since its theater release, the bloodsucking movie starring Bill Skarsgård and Lily-Rose Depp has sparked excitement. Already, director Eggers hints at an extended cut of his long-anticipated project that he’s been developing since 2015.
In simpler terms, Eggers pointed out during his analysis for Esquire UK that the trailer includes a scene showing Skarsgård’s Count Orlok from behind, which is an interesting shot. However, this particular angle could spoil some suspense because it suggests that Orlok is nearby when he should still be hidden to maintain tension.
Eggers commented that we should maintain an air of mystery around him. By the way, if you’re interested in buying the Blu-ray, it contains an extended version of the movie.
The release date for the extended version of Nosferatu is yet to be announced, but artwork for the official Blu-ray suggests that both the theatrical and extended cuts of the movie will be available together when it hits shelves from Focus Features and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment in the future.
Rather than wait for the extended edition, here’s how the above scene unfolds in Eggers’ script:
Nosferatu Deleted Scene
Ellen approaches the window…
She swings it wide open, letting in a gust of wind…
She gently lifts her arms, inviting, much like a mystic…
Without uttering a sound, she communicates to Orlok…
(Voiceover) ELLEN: (whispered) I summon thee, approach me.
INT. GRÜNEWALKD MANOR. CHAPEL — SIMULTANEOUSLY
Orlok halts his stride. He turns his head. He senses Ellen’s presence.
In the hands of director Eggers, Nosferatu unfolds as a chilling narrative about an enigmatic young woman’s fixation on a dreadful vampire who has his sights set on her, leaving a trail of terror wherever he goes.
In the movie “Nosferatu,” currently showing exclusively in cinemas, Bill Skarsgård from the “IT” films takes on the role of Count Orlok/Nosferatu, while Lily-Rose Depp, known for “Silent Night,” plays Ellen Hutter. Thomas Hutter, who starred as Superman, is portrayed by Nicholas Hoult in this production. Emma Corrin, famous for her roles in both “Deadpool” and “Wolverine,” stars as Anna, Aaron Taylor-Johnson from “Kraven the Hunter” plays Friedrich Harding, and Willem Dafoe, most recently seen in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” assumes the role of Prof. Albin Eberhart Von Franz.
