The classic vampire tale, Nosferatu has haunted generations, right back to the 1922 silent film starring Max Schreck as the bloodsucking Count Orlok.
The movie “Nosferatu the Vampyre,” made by Werner Herzog in 1979, was influenced by FW Murnau’s classic horror film, which was itself a loose adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel “Dracula” from 1897.
Next up is Robert Eggers, the imaginative filmmaker known for creating the peculiar seafaring ballad, The Lighthouse (2019), as well as the Viking epic, The Northman (2022).
Without a doubt, Eggers’ adaptation of Nosferatu is nothing short of breathtaking. Loyal to the original tale, as a young real estate agent encounters Orlok within his eerie Transylvanian abode, it’s hard to imagine a horror film that looks more enchanting.
In comparison to Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 film “Bram Stoker’s Dracula,” this work of art stands out exceptionally. The way it manipulates light and shadow is captivating. It’s a chilling yet enthralling portrayal of the vampire legend, keeping viewers captivated from the opening scene right through to its haunting conclusion.
In this version of events, Nicholas Hoult portrays Thomas Hutter, a youthful representative dispatched by his firm to negotiate business with the enigmatic Orlok (Bill Skarsgård). While he’s away, his spouse Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp) stays behind, bonding with Ellen’s close companion Anna Harding (Emma Corrin) and her husband, Friedrich (Aaron Taylor-Johnson).
As Hutter reaches the town inhabited by Orlok, he encounters residents who are petrified, urging him to turn back from his voyage. Unfazed, he arranges a meeting with Orlok, only to become ensnared within the castle walls, while the Count embarks on a trek towards Germany in search of Hutter’s wife as prey.
In a nod to another chilling masterpiece, Eggers recruited the esteemed Willem Dafoe, known for his captivating role in Shadow of the Vampire (2000). Here, he portrays Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, a scholar versed in the arcane and mystical realms, capable of deciphering the enigmatic psychic link between Orlok and Ellen.
Additionally, British actor Ralph Ineson, known for his role in director Eggers’ chilling 2015 debut, “The Witch,” is featured in the cast, taking on the character of Dr. Wilhelm Sievers, a physician tasked with caring for the ill Ellen.
At the core of it is an outstanding performance by Skarsgård, who has built a reputation for sending shivers down viewers’ spines – from his role as Pennywise the Clown in the two-part adaptation of Stephen King’s It to his standout performance in this year’s hit movie Barbarian.
In this movie, he’s scarcely similar due to being swamped by layers of prosthetics, yet he manages a spine-tingling performance as a solitary character compelled to fulfill his physical desires. The film bristles with sexual tension, leaving Ellen to struggle for her spiritual survival.

Nosferatu stands out particularly for its stunning visual and tactile style, which has been brilliantly crafted by cinematographer Jarin Blaschke, who has worked on all of Eggers’ films. The desaturated look strips the film of color, immersing us in this night-time story.
This rendition showcases a color scheme of black, deep blues reminiscent of midnight, and silvery tones akin to moonlight, immersing spectators in the eerie realm of a gothic horror story.
The movie, boasting a noteworthy score by Robin Carolan, exudes an authentic 19th-century atmosphere. Costumes designed by Linda Muir are meticulously tailored, while Craig Lathrop’s production design contributes significantly. A large part of the film was filmed on Prague’s soundstages.
Among the strong ensemble, Johnny Depp delivers an outstanding performance that stands out, marking one of his finest roles yet. Meanwhile, Tom Houlton maintains a solid presence as the husband fighting tirelessly to rescue his dearly cherished one. However, Corrin and Taylor-Johnson seem to play secondary roles in this narrative.
Ultimately, Eggers’s film stands out as an impressive, visually stunning horror that promises to make a significant impact during the upcoming award ceremonies. This chilling production is certain to have you gripping the edges of your seat with fear.
