As a horror enthusiast with a penchant for the chilling and macabre, I can hardly contain my excitement for Robert Eggers’ remake of Nosferatu. With the stellar cast led by Bill Skarsgard, this film promises to be a terrifying masterpiece that will undoubtedly leave audiences spellbound.
The highly-anticipated horror remake of Nosferatu by director Robert Eggers, set to hit theaters on Christmas Day, promises an unprecedented transformation from star Bill Skarsgard. This metamorphosis, according to his co-star Nicholas Hoult, is “concerning” – a statement that suggests viewers should prepare for something extraordinary. In an interview with IndieWire (via CBR), Hoult shared that Skarsgard’s performance was so transformative, he seemed to vanish entirely, leaving nothing of the actor behind.
In simpler terms, Houlton stated that the person portrayed isn’t Bill, but is instead terrifying. What makes this troubling is how convincingly he transforms into the character. There’s no trace of Bill left in his performance, making it both scary and intimidating. His voice, physical appearance (enhanced by makeup), and overall character work are exceptional. The character he plays is truly captivating.
Previously, Eggers mentioned the remarkable change that Skarsgård experienced during his portrayal of Nosferatu.
Eggers stated, “Bill has undergone such a remarkable change, I worry he may not receive the recognition he deserves because he seems to have vanished, in a sense. He was keen on acknowledging those who had paved the way for him. It’s quite subtle… However, my belief is that he has become even more of a folkloric vampire. In my opinion, he embodies the image of a deceased Transylvanian nobleman, and we haven’t ever truly seen what an actual dead Transylvanian nobleman would appear like or dress in.
For Skarsgård, portraying Count Orlok in Nosferatu left a significant impact on him, going so far as to state that viewers might not immediately recognize him beneath the grotesque and sexualized characterization he adopted for the role.
He stated, “It left quite an impact. It felt as though I was dealing with unadulterated darkness.” Later on, he shared, “It took some time before I could free myself from the darkness that had been summoned within me.
He went on to say, “He’s distasteful, yet heavily sexualized. It explores a sexual fetish related to the monster’s power and its allure for you. Ideally, it will leave you feeling both attracted and repulsed by your attraction. I doubt people will recognize me in it.
In a fresh interpretation inspired by the 1922 silent movie “Nosferatu” (an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula), filmmaker Eggers offers a chilling tale of obsession between a young woman, haunted by her past, and the terrifying vampire who is enamored with her. This captivating story unfolds with unexpected terror as Count Orlok, portrayed by Skarsgård, leaves a trail of horror in his wake. The film also features Lily-Rose Depp, Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, and Simon McBurney. Eggers promises that this version will delve deeper into the narrative of Ellen, portrayed by Depp, compared to previous adaptations.
Eggers stated that the film is quite frightening, falling under the horror genre and even more specifically, Gothic horror. In his opinion, it’s been a while since we’ve seen an old-school Gothic movie capable of truly scaring us. He believes that most viewers will find this film to be genuinely terrifying.
He commented, “This version is more Ellen’s tale than the earlier ones… Lily-Rose’s performance is simply extraordinary.
Nosferatu opens in theaters December 25th.
