Not Exploitative

Ellen Pompeo firmly maintains that her latest production, Good American Family, which delves into the troubling real-life narrative of Natalia Grace – a dwarfism adoptee who was falsely accused by her adoptive parents of lying about her age and planning to harm their family, is not sensationalistic or exploitative in its portrayal.

“I think the way we’re telling this story is not exploitative at all,” Pompeo told TopMob.com.

We made sure not to be manipulative in our approach, and everyone involved, including Katie Robbins, the originator of the project, pondered over the question: “What’s the purpose behind narrating this tale? Is our motivation strong enough?

In truth, many of us in Hollywood claim that we have valid reasons for our actions, as we advocate for diversity and aim to portray various stories and characters. However, it’s uncommon to hear perspectives from individuals with dwarfism being shared. We strive to represent everyone, yet there’s a scarcity of opportunities for their voices to be heard.

We present our views about them through the screen, in unique and distinct manners, but rarely do we hear the perspective of people of small stature sharing their own stories.

Afterward, Pompeo proceeded to enumerate additional “rationales” as to why Good American Family remains valid beyond the widespread attention given to Natalia Grace’s tale.

She mentioned that some of our cast members are neurodiverse kids, too. Our series tackles various mental health struggles, explores the effects of abuse and neglect, delves into parental responsibilities, and examines how our actions influence children. Therefore, I believe we had numerous compelling reasons to share this narrative.

In this scenario, the characters portrayed by Pompeo (as Kristine Barnett) and Mark Duplass (as Michael) gradually become suspicious that the girl played by Natalia Grace might not be who she claims to be.

In this tale, as they protect their loved ones from someone they now see as a potential danger, she embarks on a personal journey to face her history and foresee her destiny. This confrontation eventually unfolds in both sensationalized media headlines and court proceedings.

However, unlike her current conviction in Good American Family, Pompeo originally expressed “significant reservations” or “harbored doubts” before deciding to participate in the show.

As a movie enthusiast, I understand that this tale is intricate and needs to be handled delicately. It demands careful consideration and the perfect touch. That’s why, after just one chat with Katie, I knew her sensitivity and thoughtfulness were exactly what was needed to bring this story to life in the right way.

Imogen Faith Reid, an actor with dwarfism who plays Natalia, echoed Pompeo’s comments.

Katie showed immense understanding and sensitivity throughout our scenes, and she collaborated closely with us on each one. Moreover, she was fiercely dedicated to conveying Natalia’s tale effectively, ensuring that our production was in capable hands.

Reid also praised the cast and crew for checking in on each other throughout filming.

She mentioned that there were some challenging moments during filming, but the positive and supportive atmosphere made it all worthwhile. Everyone, from the cast to the crew, created a secure work environment.

In the course of accomplishing a few difficult tasks, Ellen and I found a sense of ease together. Following these challenges, we would routinely check on each other’s well-being. She consistently inquired about my state, and there were instances where I contemplated returning the favor because it seemed she was also struggling greatly with these tasks.

In essence, what truly matters is ensuring the well-being of the one you’re interacting with. ‘Are you at ease? Are you secure? Are you alright?’ I believe this was something we all prioritized in our interactions with one another.
