The Nintendo Switch surpassing the PS2 as the best-selling console of all time is nothing short of remarkable. I still remember waiting in line for hours to get my hands on the original PlayStation back in the day.
A noteworthy report about the U.S. video game industry for November 2024, released by Circana, showcases some intriguing achievements: The Nintendo Switch has surpassed the PS2 to become America’s top-selling console of all time, and EA Sports College Football 25 has secured its position as the highest-grossing sports game in history.
In that report, you’ll find various headlines accompanied by a wealth of additional information. The sector, however, experienced a 7% decrease compared to last year.
In the recent month, the PlayStation 5 emerged as the top-selling hardware platform, taking into account both unit and dollar sales. This impressive feat was further bolstered by the introduction of the PS5 Pro, which made up approximately 19% of the total systems sold. Compared to its counterpart from November 2016, the PS4 Pro, it saw a decrease in unit sales by about 12%, but managed to earn 50% more due to its significantly higher price tag.
As a devoted gamer, I’ve noticed an interesting trend in the gaming world. The PS5 has consistently grown in popularity year after year, while both the Switch and Xbox Series X|S have seen declines – a drop of 3% for the Switch and a significant 29% for the Xbox Series X|S. This recent slide is particularly troubling for Microsoft, as it marks their gaming division’s worst performance since 2006. To make matters worse, this decline comes hot on the heels of the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 onto the Xbox Game Pass – a move that was expected to boost sales but seems to have had the opposite effect.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to say, the latest Call of Duty is already making waves as one of the top two best-sellers this year! When it comes to November sales, there weren’t many shocking revelations, but Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D managed to secure the 12th spot on the charts. Astro Bot also saw a bit of an upgrade, climbing up to the 13th position.
Meanwhile, the PS Portal is consistently surpassing predictions, and accessories are proving to be a significant revenue generator for Sony.
